My brother just started a job with a car dealership, & he has to pay $250, just to get his job application processed. I thought that you must NEVER pay for applying for a job.

Maybe the laws in your state say that to work at a car dealership everybody there has to have a ''dealers license'' and that's what the $250 is for,But I definitely would look into it asap and see if that's what is going on.

If it is just for application processing I would not pay it. I was hired for a job once where I had to pay for the fingerprinting and criminal background check; they paid it back after I was there for three months. However I was already hired before I had to pay that money and I did not pay it to my employer; I paid the fee to the place that did the background check and fingerprinting.

I wouldn't pay it if I was your brother. Even if it is not a scam it is still too much to pay to have an application processed.

If your brother is applying though an employment service there may be a fee for their services, but if he's applying through the dealership they may be scamming him, unless they informed him of this before he started. It may be a refundable fee that is reimbursed after a probationary period. If that's the case it's to pay for such things as a physical and any other expenses paid by his employer.

I think this is a scam. Look up the company, if its a well known name then its okay. It could just be the guys playing a trick on him. But you NEVER pay for your job application, unless it is a highly professional thing, like dancing or something...

Have him call the local Better Business Bureau on this particular company.. There are some jurisdictions that require certain licensing and a fee is attached. This can be checked by contacting the local government. It does however warrant exploration without paying anything up front.

Sounds suspicious. I don't think I'd pay simply out of principal. What is the justification? What are realistic expectations as far as job earnings? Don't be a sucker!
