I have a friend that had a maltese/bichon mix that was chained outside and bit a small girl when she ran through their yard. It wasn't because he was mean, it was because he was excited. The girl's family made them put the dog down. I just lost my dog and I know it's impossible. Do you think that's unfair?

That is awful. People will put an animal down at the drop of hat. Also, the girl was in their backyard...in the dogs territory...she should not have messed with the dog in the first place.

Lots of dogs get excited, but they don't all bite people. I don't think anything about this situation was fair to the dog--what the heck is your friend doing chaining up a dog in the first place? That's cruel right there. If you're going to have a dog, have a proper fence around your property, for pete's sake. What the heck was the neighbor doing letting thier kid run through someone else's yard? They can't MAKE someone put down a pet--only a court can do that. They would have had to file a complaint, and there would have been a hearing involving a judge...did any of this happen? No, right? They just put the dog down. Argh. Stupid neighbors, stupid pet owners. The one who pays for all of this, sadly, is the pet.

You consider someone who would chain their dog outside your 'friend?'

And I think your 'friend' is giving you a bunch of baloney. If it was a first bite, they are not required to euthanize the animal. If they had no proof of rabies immunization, Animal Control would simply have quarantined the dog (at the owner's cost) to insure the animal did not have rabies and transmit it to the child. That is standard procedure. And we are NOT talking about a big rottweiler or doberman pinscher or mastiff. The dog is a little maltese/bichon mix that could hardly have weighed even 10 lbs. My PURSE sometimes weighs that! I think the parents did not want to be bothered, but then the fact that they chained the poor dog up and didn't let it in the house is indicative of that already.

Yes,very unfair as the pet was only doing its job of protecting its territory and child should have had better supervision from the parents. If the pet was confined to a chain and in its own yard,I can hardly believe there could have been anything the parents of the child could have done to the dog chained and owners of such.

I think that is completely unfair... I understand that alot of people would rather everyone use muzzles when walking a dog since you never know, but it was is it's own yard... Next thing you know, people are going to control how you manage the dog in the house too...

Unfortunately the poor dog lost its life because of its owners. They should not have chained him in the front yard knowing he was easily excitable with children running around. They were asking for it. Too bad they couldn't put the owners down instead. Sorry that is upsetting.

unfortunately in todays society fair doesn't mean a whole lot. The dog should have never been tied up outside. Those kind of dogs are indoor not outdoor.

Well the small girl shouldn't have ran through someone elses yard to begin with and the dog wouldn't have bit her. So yes I think it is sad and not your fault.

I think anyone who owns a dog should have a fence, train your dog, and walk with the dog, at least daily. This protects you from 'stray' people in your yard, and lets the dog play and use up energy.
If you don't have a fence, don't leave your dog outside.
You must train your dogs not to bite!
Walking dogs trains them who the boss is, and helps keep them under control..
If you love your dog [ kid, horse, cat, etc. ] PLEASE train them
and control them!

Well , depend's , was the little girl teasing or taunting the dog ? Or did she just inoccently walk thru ?
If she was teasing him , then you can't really blame the dog . Where were her parents at when all this happend. Didn't her parent's teach her not to go into other peoples yards?
I know mine did . And they also taught me to keep far from dogs that didn't belong to me. .. Yes that was cruel , ONLY if she was taunting it .
