I am a beginner to this hobby

It seems a little harder nowadays to be a hobbiest. There used to be many electronics magazines that had projects and educational articles as well as featuring kits.
The electronic project kits are a fun way too get started. Either individual kits like radios or the 100 in 1 , 200 in 1 kits available at hobby stores and Radio Shack. Hobby Lobby carries some of them. Radio shack and independent electronics stores will have many basic books like the op-amp cookbook. These have circuits for all kinds of projects and give some basic theory. Also check out the library and bookstore. Start with the basics and work your way up. When I was a kid I couldn't afford to buy all the parts I needed so any discarded radios etc. were my sources. Parts are actually much cheaper now.
I no longer do much as a hobby but have spent the last 24 years building and repairing electronics for a living.
Good luck, and have fun.

1. Electronics hobby clubs

2. You can buy a 100 in 1 electronic project kit (no soldering necessary) from Maplins.

3. You can get project kits from the same store. Start with something easy and work your way up (but this method doesn't teach how components work together).

4. Get a beginners book on electronics and learn what the components actually do.

Of all the suggestions, 1 and 4 are the most useful ways to go.

I haven't found very many good websites. There are lots of websites that provide you with circuit examples, but they are generally weak on providing you knowledge of electrical theory. You can find many good books at a larger book store or looking on line at one of the better book sellers such as Powell Books or Amazon. If you don't yet know the fundamentals of electric circuits, it's best to get a basic electric theory book first. Then, a text such as The Art of Electronics by Horowitz and Hill is a very good introduction into the principles and circuits of semiconductor devices, and the fundamentals of electronics. From there, it depends on your areas of interest, whether it be communication devices, control devices, audio systems, etc. Taking courses at a community college or university is the best way to go.
