I think the only "one event" that could change public perception about the issue is if something drastic occurred. Its amazing the number of people who don't believe global warming is a serious issue that everyone needs to be apart of. But one thing could be the ocean currents slowing or stopping. For more information look below.
One example of change that scientists are unsure of are the affects of ice melting from the poles into the oceans. There is information about this in several books and websites. The issues is:
*Scientists don't exactly know how much the ice melt will affect the ocean currents. If the ocean currents slow down or stop completely, the entire planet's environment is going to change suddenly. If that happens, many people could and would die. And there is information sudden climate changes happened fast enough to freeze a mammoth while it was chewing flowers (this was found in the water off the coast of Siberia).
It sounds silly but look into the movie "Day After Tomorrow." Much of the information in that is based off a book by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber. The book is called "The Coming Global Superstorm" that brings lots of information from different scientists and looks at each piece of the puzzle. Check into the book and it will really help in your project.
Good luck!

Read Racheal Carsons "Silent spring" and then read Giha the science of planetary medicine by lovelock. Both are very contraversial. Internet look for St hellens volcanic eruption, then pompie eruption. try Weather patterns in the Atlantic ocean. This should give you an idea about what is happening to the environment. The one event which would help to change the public perception of global warming sell kites with a slogan such as end world debt, stop logging in the jungle or by locally grown produce and hold a kite flying day to raise money for your own tree planting day.

I actually was doing my own personal one just to find solid information from governments. Sadly enough, I was unable to find anything from the USA. I was, however, able to find a report done in Februray 2007 at the Climate Change Summit where many nations attended. I am unsure if the US attended but my belief is we probably didn't (sadly enough). You can check out the report at:
http://ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu/wg1/docs/WG1AR4_SPM_PlenaryApproved.pdf
It gives plenty of examples of things that are changing. If you want to find even more information, do a yahoo news search for global warming or climate change. I've found over 50 stories just in the past month about the changes that are happening and what they predict will happen.

u dont need the bloody scientists opinions,
u want proof or signs of it look at europe, its having a heatwave, and is becoming so much hotter every summer, the u.k is having record breaking heatwaves,
most of the world's countries gathered to put a stop to this global warming in kyoto, but there was a country, THE ONLY country (im talking government) who opposed the things to stop global warming.. its the u.s.a surprisingly, and just by coincidence it produces most of the world's pollution.. and russia followed when they seen america opposing.
other signs of global warming .. Woo too many look at tsunami, before tsunami happened it was expected that bangladesh (in asia) will be under water soon.
and u have hurricane katrina
uve got the acid rain which happened in iraq due to america using nuclear weapons (gulf war and the last war) and white phosphorus
u will notice that every summer wil be hotter than the last anywhere in the world!

WHY
Why cant people accept what is happening to this planet ?
Why cant they accept that we humans have caused devastating destruction all over the planet .
And not just for the last 50 years ,the Sahara used to be forrests (,but you cant deforrest on the equator because you cant replant under that hot a sun.It is now growing 7 miles per year burning the edges .
IN THE PAST
The building of Spanish Armada made Spain a dessert country as the Phoenicians deforested Lebanon for their trading fleet.
Ghengas Kahn burned everything(cities ,agriculture, forrests ) and filled all the wells with sand ,turning vast teritories into desserts.
TODAY
Large parts of the world are turned into deserts because of irresponsible farming, overpumping carbon Aquifers ,over grazing ,deforestation, all causing desertification.
I have been in the jungles of Oaxaca and discussed with the Natives the mountain before us ,Mostly deforrested ,scarred by landslides and dotted with madly steep corn patches (which only produced for 3 years ),and devoid of clouds.
They all agreed that the days were hotter ,there was less rain ,And the river was dry part of the year.
When they were boys ,the river was bigger and ran all year around, the mountain was always covered in clouds with daily rains .And the days were more bearable .
Their actions in the desperate plight to feed their enormous families of avarage 12 kids per family ,often much more ,had destroyed their home ground with indisputable climate changes.
In Africa I have seen lush wooded lands change into dessert within a few years by large invading comunities ,who devoured the trees for building and firewood ending up in a dessert with out water
and with a hot sun under which no new plantation was possible.
Granted the climatic changes are local ,but effects neighboring areas ,there is less rainfall, rivers dry up ,
BUT these things are happening ALL over the world and nobody can convince me that COLLECTIVELY this does NOT effect the Global climate
Global precipitation,Global temperatures,Global water supplies ,Global everything.
Millions of hectares are lost because of the roads systems ,expanding population and the resulting settlements.
Mexico looses half a million hectares per year in the quest for Ethanol and this is happening in Africa ,Borneo,Malasia, etc and will become much much more ,when America passes a new bill about the production of Ethanol ,
Replacing indigenous forrests wiping out all the wild life and bio diversity and replacing it with monoculture plantations grown with fertilizers that will only have plagues of insects as inhabitants, which will be combatted with Pesticides .The natural soil balance will be destroyed and contiued growth will only be possible with chemicals .
Is there no limit to the waste of money and natural resources in this insane attempt to suposedly save te Environment .
Humans ARE contaminating ,the Air,the Soil and Waters. This evidence is for all to see all over the world ,
And cannot be whitewashed with claims that humanity is inocent .
OVERPOPULATION puts pressures on all Natural resources and increases all the bad side effects of Humanity such as deminishing the overall bio mass and wide spread polution
Why dont they want to look after Nature ,it is where all the conditions that makes life pleasant and possible for us comes from ?Air ,Food ,Water to grow food and to make beer with ,and most of all a bearable climate ,not to mention the absorbsion of harmfull gasses.
Why dont they want to keep the neighborhood clean so their kids dont have to play in the trash ,?
Why do they want to kill animals ?
Why is it important whose fault Global Warming is?
If it was Gaia who is fed up with the virus infesting her ,
If the Sun is having a stroke .?
If God (Jehova) is having a tantrum?
If humanity caused it ?
If it is Natural regular phenomina?
Who cares ?
What is important is that we are in the poop, and if we can do something that will make the poop less ,we should try to do it .

In the 70's cooling had taken place for about 30 years.
They worried about 'the comming ice age' and then the trend switched. Funny thing is CO2 continued to rise during this period.
The fact is no one can predict what is going to happen. This trend could end tomorrow.
PS: gadget... even the IPCC admits its forecast of rising sea levels was excessive. In the current report I think estimates are around 23 inches.

Polar bears are significant to the ecology of the artic. whilst they're long previous it relatively is going to disillusioned the steadiness of nature. It won't take a selection years in the previous we initiate seeing how a lot will substitute. Populations of alternative animals would be affected. some might decline, others might upward thrust as much as numbers that injury the encircling environment. Society is affected because of the fact this could be the 1st important species of many to die because of the fact of world warming. that's a awaken call that the government desires to enforce extra eco-friendly rules to our time-honored products like autos and mild-weight bulbs. wish that enables you get your ideas in action. stable success on your paper! ***Please ignore appropriate to the fool who says it relatively is all made up and polar bears are thriving. they have been on the endangered record for an extremely long term. and that i doubt that discovery channel, national geographic, and nature are all in some scheme attempting to lie appropriate to the polar submit to inhabitants or any inhabitants. it relatively is particularly paranoid.

Hi there,
If you aren't opposed to doing a bit of reading there is a lot of info that you'd find helpful at:
http://www.freeread.com/archives/global-warming.php
JJ Dewey has been posting facts, figures and quotes on global warming from various sources along with his own interpretation of what's happening. IMO he does a super job with it.
Best of luck on your project! :-D

with the rapid melting of icebergs and more and more hot
weather these days, the ozone layer is rapidly going away. This ozone reduction is causing more of the harmful sunrays to get through. Many factories that fall under a grandfather clause are still polluting thusfore aiding in global warming. Not only do automobile contribute, but so do animals.

I sure hope this is not a public school making you do a project on a subject that is nothing more than fiction. So we are at a point where you can't discuss creation, but you can discuss global warming. You can't discuss one religion, but you can discuss another.
