I think that in the eyes of some, if you take a stand against something that they are in favor of, especially if their bias is more emotional than reasoned, the easiest response that they can make is to label you a hater and make that your defining identity.

As soon as you take a visible stand on any controversial issue, you cease to be a complex individual and become the issue.
