I just purchased the pioneer VSX-917V. It has 7.1 surround sound, hdmi outputs, USB plug if you want to play music from a jump drive, and a MCACC system that automatically checks for calibration to make sure speakers sound great no matter where you put them. Price? $299 at Best Buy. This was on sale a couple of weeks ago. The price may be around $400 now. Good luck in your search.

I don't know, most receivers right now are looking at a couple million dollar contract. But for $500 you might be able to get a kicker or a tight end.

The Onkyo TX-SR605 ($499.99 at Crutchfield) is 7.1 surround and is one of the first AV receivers to offer HDMI 1.3 as well as Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio decoding. This makes it PERFECT if you want to be ready for Blu-ray or HD DVD. Very nice AV receiver.

If you need the newest audio decoding that Blu Ray and HD-DVD use, buy a brand new cheaper entry level receiver.
If you don't need that, buy a warrantied factory refurbished receiver. You'll get a much higher-end model for the money.
