I use a 50% white vinegar and 50% rubbing alcohol mix in a squeeze bottle. The alcohol dries the ear and the vinegar makes it impossible for fungus to grow. I've used it for 15 yrs and use it to clean and and also after swimming.

Instead of having to treat ear infections, in the future, once current infection is clear, regularly use an 'ear cleaner' preparation. All good pet shops and vets can supply these.

Just use it once or twice a week as a preventative instead of having to find a cure for an infection. Earache is an extremely painful and irritating problem for dogs as well as ourselves!

One of the causes for ear infections is wet ear canals - so take care you don't get your dog's ears wet inside when bathing. Also, plucking too much hair is a very common cause of ear infections because it causes serum to ooze from the hair pores and that's a medium for bacteria growth. Clean ears when necessary with a cotton ball dampened with warm water or ear cleaner, but be sure you never go farther into the ear than you can see.

It's typical of a golden retriever to have ear problems, but it's usually yeast. We have a beagle with the same problem. We have to put drops or cream in her ears daily. It's a prescription though so you have to go to the vet. We have tried many and have found that otomax ointment works the best.

One of the ways to clean your dogs ears out is a powder you can get at any pet supply store. One brand is called Excel Ear Powder. You put the powder in the dogs ear and the powder will absorb any liquids in the ear. While it's at it it will make the hair in the ear brittle enough that you can clean it out.

Keeping the hair cut away from inside their ear canals helps any dog. Dry and clean of parasites as always
