They lay eggs...Mammals don't lay eggs.

They are mammals because they have nipples and nurse their young. They, and echidnas, lay eggs. Mammals, from the monotreme order, do lay eggs.
Indeed, the amniotic sac in humans is basically an egg we never got around to laying.

In actual fact, the platypus does NOT have what are recognised as nipples - milk from the mammary glands oozes out through ducts at two areas on the abdomen.
Mammals have mammary glands - it's what defines a mammal.
There are three main groups of mammals:-
+ Monotremes - Egg-laying mammals (platypus and echidna are the only two living species). These do not have nipples but do have mammary glands and produce milk.
+ Marsupials (mammals with pouches, such as kangaroos)
+ Placental mammals (mammals that retain their developing young in the womb and nourish them through a placenta. This group includes us)

Well, nipples are practically the defining feature of a mammal.
So I always assumed they had them.
