When is one supposed to engage ones critical thinking?

I’ve heard that one needs to read the Bible with faith and believe what it tells you. These things include people walking on water, the sun stopping in its course across the sky, snakes talking, and the dead coming back to life.

What else is one suppose to read with faith?

The Egyptian Book of the Dead?
Peter Pan?
Science papers and text books?
At the Mountains of Madness?

What are the criteria for determining when one needs to read with faith and when one needs to let the manuscript speak for itself while engaging critical thinking and observations of the physical universe?

I think that everything should be read with open minded critical thinking, at all times. Open minded critical thinking means that you don't swallow everything whole, and you are not blindly faithful, but you do understand that not everything is as it seems, and that we actually know extremely little about the history of this world, about this universe, and about ultimate reality. The more we think we know, the less we actually do know! *sm*

Don't worry about the faith. It will either come or not. But read the at least read the Bible so you can at least understand what it is that people who read it with faith are coming from. Consider it a lesson in psychology and sociology rolled up into one.

Yes it means more when you read it and you have faith in the word. But to just read it is knowledge and knowledge is power no matter what you believe.

From age 5-7 I loved the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. I read every single one. I wanted to believe there was an Oz to go to-but as you can see, I'm still here, but those books and others inspired me to write my own stories. .
I think critical thinking should always be engaged.
