Does your dog not bark or does your dog have a bark that is very quiet that sounds as if he's coughing?

It's possible that your dog is debarked. But debarking is a procedure that SOFTENS the sound that comes out of a dog's mouth when it barks. Debarking a dog DOES NOT mean that you take away the dog's ability to bark. If your dog is a puppy, it's highly unlikely. And if you got your dog from a breeder ask them. If you rescued the dog, the dog may just prefer not to bark. Huskies normally don't bark, they howl instead.

Please read up more on debarking and unless you hear your dog bark and it isn't a full bark and it's low in quality, then your dog probably just doesn't like to bark.

I think the likelihood of it is very small.

Was it a shelter dog? If so, many shelter dogs come in from bad homes where they were severely punished for barking and they stop barking entirely.
The debarking surgery is the least likely culprit as most vets won't do it.
It could also just be the dog's personality. I had a dog that only barked if another dog barked at her.
Take her to a dog park and see how she acts there. Sometimes being around other dogs will encourage them to bark.

Anything's possible--why do you ask? Why can't you ask the person you got him from?

Most dogs won't bark unless they are confident in their environment. Maybe he just hasn't settled in yet. Once he determines what his territory is, he will be more likely to protect it, and barking is one way to warn other animals (including people) to stay away from their territory. Give him time. Also, the more "wild" or true to nature a dog is, the less it barks, and huskies are less domesticated than a lot of other breeds. Do you hear wolves barking all the time? Of course not. It would signal their location to their enemies. I have a Tibetan Mastiff that has gone years without barking, and when he did, it surprised everybody in the family! I have never owned a husky, but would imagine that they don't do a lot of useless barking. Good luck with your pup.

Everything is possible, however, I doubt it. Where did you get her? A legitimate vet would not debark a dog-that is cruel, and a husky rescue would not have done it either.

Depends...if you area asking this I would assume that you haven't heard your dog bark yet. Well, some dogs don't bark when you first get them. And also, when dogs are debarked you can hear like a wheezing when they ar trying to bark. Hope this helps!

I have a 14 year old husky and he only barks when he wants in after going potty and when I tell him to bark. even then its not a bark its more of a howl or a loud whine. Huskies do not normaly have a bark like a lab or German Shepard. a loud BARK that is destinguishable 3 blocks away.

No. Your new husky has not been debarked. Huskies do not bark. They 'talk'. 'Talking' is sometimes mistaken as yelping or whining. Don't worry. It's normal.

There is an opperation that does this but it's risky and most vets will not have anything do to with it. More than likely your husky just doesn't want to bark. Some dogs that grow up as the only dog don't hear barking so they don't mimick it and never learn how to do it. I have a few that just don't bark

Where did you get you dog from? If it is from a good breeder, then it is extremly unlikley (and probably illegial in some places). If it was from a shelter, its possible, because dogs that come from recues are somtimes put there becuase they were abused and taken away from the original owner.

Most likley though, is that your new huskey is just shy and needs some time to get used to its now home and surroundings. Bond with it and show that you love him/her.

Huskeys are adorable! Good Luck, Ellie
