While 12V is the same voltage, what is different between the car battery and the small battery is the current capacity, AH. A car battery has probably 60AH or more and that can sustain the heavy starting current drawn by the self starter when you turn the ignition on. The toy batteries have a small fraction of an AH (Ampere Hour) and cannot sustain heavy currents. That is why your car did not start.

Batteries are rated in ampere-hours and car batteries also include a parameter known as maximum cranking capability. The starting ampere load for a car is very high and a small battery has not the capacity to sustain that high of a current delivery.

voltage is just the potential difference between the two terminals. The most important unit is charge. How much charge is stored in the battery. The smaller the battery the less charge. The car and engine needs a certain amount of charge to get the engine started. I think your 12volt battery might have been drained in the attempt.

relies upon, on the voltage distinction between the two batteries. If the voltages are an identical the no present day will pass and no charging will ensue. A rectified alternator or rectified AC source is plenty extra effectual in charging batteries and you may decrease overcharging that can harm lead-acid batteries. additionally, an alternator or application AC is comparatively infinite while batteries have constrained skill.

Internal resistance is different.
12V is the open circuit measurement.
If u connect eg 1k load across both battery and check, the one with lower internal resistance will have higher voltage, in this case --- the big one.
