Wear glasses or light sunglasses. Or chop them underwater*- yes, it is possible.

*that's the onions underwater, not you!

I can help you solve this one. This works for me:

When you are peeling or chopping onions do so on the chopping board beside the sink with the cold water tap running. The running water absorbs the smell of the onion that causes the tears to build up in your eyes. Also you could try doing this beside an open window. The fresh air coming in the window will keep your eyes clear of the sting. No more crying. Both of these works for me. Now I don't mind peeling or chopping onions anymore. Good Luck.

Put the onion in the freezer for a few minutes before chopping, it freezes the juices in the onion and won't burn your eyes as bad

Light a candle right beside where you are chopping the onion. The heat will absorb the fumes and prevent it from burning your eyes.

Keep your knives sharp and don't cut the root off until last, sometimes these work.

As a footnote I alternate between glasses and contact lenses; when I wear lenses I have no problem at all, however when I wear glasses I cry like a baby when I'm cutting onions.

Yes - soaking in water helps - but I also find that whilst I am chopping the onions, I whistle and it really works - no silly goggles!!

They say peel them under running water or don't cut off the root until the end! I personally recommend the use of swimming goggles!
