Black furniture is a non color. Meaning that the sky is the limit as to what you can use with it. Look to your art or area rugs and find a color that you like and use a version of it on the walls. If you pull a color that is not dominate you will find that it will pop more then add accent pillows on you black furniture to pull the color around the room

Just about any color you want. Stick to a light shade unless you want the den dark. Light red, light blue or green, pick a color that suits the need. Is the den for relaxing and working or just working? Answer yourself by asking what is the MAIN use of the den and then what colors do I like that suits the main use of the den. For relaxing, use a softer color, for work you can go a little bolder. Have Fun! You could even have a mural on the wall, or hang old maps of places you've been to, use your imagination and make it a show place!

You don't mention flooring but I have black/oak furniture with a canvas gold couch and saltilo tile floors-2 walls are accented in textured wallpaper (bought white at Lowes-looks like grasscloth) painted in the same gold-we have white built-ins with oak tops/molding-its rich and warm without being dark. I have a burgandy/burnt red as an accent -pillows in winter/fall and green in spring/summer-its fun to exchange pillows and get a new room. Everyone that comes to my house says it looks like a model home,so I'm guessing it looks ok.
Go to HGTV.com-they have ref. idea sections for you-also DIYnetwork's site-
Good luck!
PS get a good primer -like Kilz and stop working so hard or considering a color just as a cover-a rich taupe or tan would look classy too-

Prime the walls and paint a nice golden rod color and leave the base boards white. Accent the room with gold, black and white items.

A lot depends on your intended mood and purpose for the room. A nice sandy-toned beige would provide a nice calming effect, while a light turquoise or teal would be bright and cheery. Or, you could do both: main color as desert sand, with large squares or blocks of teal for drama.

One red wall, use pillows and throws for contrast on furniture. The rest a light grey.

There is nothing wron with white, but prime your walls first with Kilz or something if the white is bleeding through.
If you stay with white, or an off white, you can change accents of color with pillows/accessories more often for different looks/seasons/moods.

I think light yellow, light lavender, light orange/brown etc. would all be bright enough and still provide the necessary contrast...
