GPA is all your grades averaged together, including the F. It gives a points value to each letter. A's are usually given 4 points, B's 3 and so on, so there are zero points averaged in for a failing grade, but the credits taken are still included in the average. So and F can definitley bring your Grade Point average down. Good luck!

The F will kill a 4.0 GPA so, if you into numbers, most colleges do replace the F with a repeat course. It sort of a way to make things right.
One other thing, if, you are struggling in a course it may be best to drop it entirely and focus on the other courses. TWO things here, (1) know when the last day to drop is and take advantage of the course as long as possible, it may help you next time around. (2) Know how many hours you need to have to keep any Grants you get, free money is free money. Usually you can drop from 12 hours to 9 hours and still be consider full time for grants.

As you seem to be aware, LSDAS recalculates your GPA according to their own system. You can dig around on the lsac website to see if they make that information public, but as far as I know the old grades *will* count toward your law school application. I am not sure how they deal with the repeated classes, but suffice it to say that most colleges treat repeated classes much more kindly than the LSDAS does. You will benefit from the fact that the failed classes were so long ago - it won't change your GPA, but law schools will be much more willing to overlook them.

If u retake the same class, the higher of the 2 grades count in your GPA. But the F still stays on your permanant record

Yes, it includes the failed grade. The F will still be included on the student transcript and will be calculated along with the new grade for that course.

A=4
B=3
