it was a spiritual mark... the mark was assurance for cain that he would not be killed.

It would appear that it was a literal, physical mark of some kind. It was NOT a change in his race or skin color. If it had been, then it would have ended at the time of Noah's Ark, as no descendants of Cain survived the flood. So the mark of Cain is not one of the races in existence today.

I was always taught as a child that he was turned "black".
