Because it's all relative. The deeper down you sink, they higher they look in comparison. It's not that they're extra-happy, you're just extra-depressed.
Plus, you feel isolated and left out, so of course it looks like everybody else is having the time of their lives, when you're all alone.

I know what you mean, it kind of makes you left out too. Like you're all alone. I think it's just that we notice other people's happiness the most when we are unhappy. On a serious note, if you are very depressed you should really consider getting medication for it. There is nothing wrong with needing a little help to get over the hump. If you have a close friend, tell them you could use a shoulder to lean on. Talking about your feelings can help. Good Luck.

This is merely because of the contrast of what your feeling about your life and what others are feeling about theirs. It usually seems that everyone around you is very successful when you are in the deepest of depressions.

Is because that is all you choose to see. Step outside of your comfort zone and take a chance at anything that you find stimulating or interesting. Push yourself to do it. Then you will feel like you have lived and know that you have succeeded in your endeavor. That leads to more by building your confidence in yourself. Growth is painful. But wow. The feeling of exhilaration. Have fun.

It only feels like that because of the state you are in mentally. You want to see others enjoying things in spite of yourself and what you think you require. It's normal, don't worry. When you feel like this, just think about somthing that makes you smile, something funny. It really lights up the world.

Some good answers above: see depression treatments/resources at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 2, and soon you could join them. Unfavorable comparisons rarely help.
