the issue isn't screwing up your computer, the issue is that you won't be able to run it. even if you can run it, you won't be able to run it to its full effects. the graphics may not be as good or the programs not run as smoothly etc.

It is possible. "Vista Compatible" simply means that the manufacturer had Microsoft review their configuration and confirm that everything meets Vista's requirements and the drivers for everything are on the Vista CD.

A company can build a computer that will work with Vista, but not have it certified, or provide the drivers on their web site rather then the Vista CD.

First, check the specs of your PC against the requirements for Vista to be sure you meet them (processor speed, memory, hard drive, etc.) Then visit the web site of the PC's manufacturer to see if they have had Vista drivers available.

If it does not meet the specs, or no drivers are available (or the web site does not state the PC will work with Vista), then return the package unopened for a refund.

I have ran xp on computers that didnt meet the specifications. But for vista i am not sure about running it on a non supporting computer since it has very high requirements. I dont think you should try it unless you do have hardware close to what vista requires.

Vista already has too many issues. You better not make things worse by trying to make it work on a non supporting computer. Actually, the install program will fail if the PC is not at minimum requirement because you won't have all the necessary drivers.

Go to the following web site and download the "Windows Vista upgrade adviser. Install it and run it. It will tell you if your computer will handle Vista and what you need if it can't.

Why are you in such a hurry to get the Vista "downgrade"?

not supported will resulted in a scaled back install (none of the prettiness) and also means it will run slower.

The real question is, why would you want to?
