Several Things.

One do compleate tune up at todays Gas prices cost of parts VS savings may save you a tank full.

Replace Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter , PCV Valve .

Next Replace Spark Plugs, look at the wires all green or cracked, replace as well cap and rotor, get Brass contacts not aluminum they last longer.

Drop a bottle of Gas Treatment in the tank, while you are at it replace the Gas filter.

As to Oil Buy Castrol or Valvoline dont buy cheap oil or a Generic Grocery Store brand I found Sales people will sell you anything I know Used to sell oil I know the gimmicks .

BTW if tour mileage is over 75,000 miles buy the higher mileage formula old school was 100,000 10W 40 or 20W50 or Racing Oil todays standards the Owners manual and SAE ratings has newer ratings and better refined oil.

I own a 2002 car I run 100% Synthetic better gas mileage and less sludge formation, <---------- Key word on oil quality.

Change the oil and filter immediately. That is not your problem however. The first thing to do is remove all the spark plugs and inspect them. What you are looking for is worn electrodes, but the misfire you are describing will not be seen at the electrodes. Look of the ceramic portion of the plug for a black carbon deposit or black cracks in the insulator which is the ceramic part. This if there indicates the spark is escaping to ground. To repair this you will need new spark plugs that have been gapped properly and a full set of plug wires. If that is all good, inspect both ends of the plug wires for corrosion or cracked boots or insulation. If you find this, your car needs the same parts as described as well as a fuel filter. When checking for corrosion, make sure the coil towers are not corroded too. If so, you will need new coils or a complete coil assembly depending on which type you have. If all this is okay, check the spark output at every cylinder to be sure the coil is capable of supplying the needed spark to the holes. If you find weak or no spark, you will need coils or a coil. Good luck.

Wow you really don't like this car ran it over a year with out changing the oil and you insist on driving it while there is a misfire that can destroy your emissions system to the tune of a $1,000 for new converters. Mechanics really like people like you bring in your car and complain why does it cost so much to fix my car? Quit driving! rent a modern car a couple days and get 17 year old paint fixed or replaced....
