We are visiting our uncle in Maryland and we are planning to make a short trip to Canada. How tight is the security to cross the border from Buffalo to Canada? My aunt said that it would be better to bring a rental car rather than a borrowed car because of documentation purposes and security. What's the road condition like? I hear some people say it takes day and a half, others say its 9 hrs and others say its 12.

You are looking at a 500-600 mile drive, depending on where in MD you are starting from. With the traffic situation in the Northeast, this will be about 12 hours driving (not counting stopping for fuel, food, rest rooms). If you are taking a rental into Canada, make sure that you have permission to do so, in writing, on the rental contract! You will also need to have a passport for each member of your traveling party.

Have a safe trip!

I crossed the border with my brothers car once, and they were nice about it but warned me that they next time I should have a letter from the owner of the vehicle saying we had his permission to use the vehicle. It should mention names and addresses - or the info should match your drivers license.
According to google maps - it takes 8 hours and 48 minutes from baltimore Maryland to Toronto .
Till 2008, if you cross the border by car, you don't need a passport. It should be a nice trip. Have fun.

It does NOT take anywhere near a day to get there haha. I'm driving to Toronto from Wisconsin soon and it should take about 10 hours.

Mapquest.com is the best site ever invented. Just type in your current down to where your going and they'll give you mile by mile directions.

Yes. Ontario will honor your license here, with the same limits and restrictions as in your state. I'm assuming it's like our G2 class license, in which case your probably restricted to the same rules... for example under 19 after midnight only 1 passenger 19 and under in the car. After your legal it doesn't matter.
