If you're complimenting the person, say "J'aime tes cheveux." "J'aime les cheveux" can mean either "I like the hair" or "I like hair."

J'aime tes cheveux when talking to a person

It depends entirely on the context. If you are speaking directly to someone about their hair, you will say "J'aime tes cheveux". If you are speaking about the hair of a third person you will say "J'aime les cheveux de Caroline" and perhaps specify with" Ils sont d'une jolie couleur".

"j'aime tes cheveux" means "I like your hair" "j'aime les cheveux" means "I like the hair"

"j'aime tes cheveux" means "i like your hair" but "j'aime les cheveux" means "i like the hair"... i would say the former would be more appropriate.

looks like a one on one translation from 'i love your hair"... in french we would not really say "j'aime tes cheveux" but more like "j'adore tes cheveux"....
