The first modern era champion was actually my great grandfather Jim J Corbett also known as Handsome Jim or Gentleman Jim . He won the title during the first fight using the Marquess of Queensbury rules , which are the rules that are used today . He beat John L Sullivan for the title in San Fransisco in 1894 in a 26 round bout , with a 50,000 dollar purse and a 10,000 dollar side bet between the fighters .
