Sydney stretches out across the Cumberland Plain to the Nepean River and the Blue Mountains in the west, to the Hawkesbury River (which is the lower Nepean) in the north and the Royal National Park in the south. There is a lot of building and development going on and the west has recently been very messy with the construction of the ring road.
While the outer suburbs are 50km or more from central Sydney, they have their own charm and interests. Although the city itself is on the coast, the demographic centre of Sydney is just west of Parramatta some 20km west of the city.
Many people are moving further out into the Blue Mountains or north to the central coast. This requires a long train journey every day to get to work if you are in the city but there is also work in the outer areas too.
Read up about Australia before you make any decisions. Bill Bryson's book "Down Under" would be a great place to start.

I think the original Granny Smith apple came from an orchard on the outskirts of Sydney, and I know the eastern outskirts of Sydney are pretty wet but that's all I know, maybe an ozzy will pipe up and give you more.

What do you mean by "outskirts of Australia"? (outskirts - as in "outside" away from Australia, which is the oceans? or do you mean the "outback"? And what do you wan to know about it?)
And where about is your family moving to? Australia is a BIG place - about the size of continental USA. There is so much variety as to landscape, terrain, climate and lifestyle. Telling us where you are moving to will help as to what information to give you.
What is it that you think is "great" in you question.

Forget the outskirts of Sydney, its just a disgusting mass of dilapidation contrasted with mass development.
The east or north is where you want to be. Any of the beaches (Bondi, Manly, Cronulla, Avalon, Narrabeen..) are nice places to live, as well as the suburbs around Chatswood, Ryde etc., very green..
Although, it is pretty expensive to live in these parts. Just make sure you stay away from Redfern/Surry Hills, its full of aboriginals and homeless.. but unfortunately its next to the city..

You mean the suburbs of Sydney?
Internet is right here at your fingertips. Sydney has around 4 million people, so suburbs are all around like in big US cities.
