I know a lot of regiments have been drawn in to one big one (e.g., Logistics and the Rifles). Does this mean the former regiments lose all identity or do they still carry on, merely operating under the larger 'umbrella' term?

No they just form a large regiment
Solicalist British Government have long hated the regimental system, for resons best known to themselves, proberbly because men drawn from the same city or county often have more in common with on another. I would make a point however that there is proberly not a sinhgle init in the Britsh Army that does not have an Irishman within it, they are called rude names and teased but underneath that most are well liked and respected. until wierd British humour is understood it is accused of intolerence, depending on how it is used it is nothing of the sort

some regiments just weren,t big enough for operational tours.
They will keep their identity as much as they can but its not that big a deal and the people involved seem to be moving on with the times and changes being made
