Consumer Reports recommends the Pro Form 700S. It is considered to be great for the money and will cost you about $500.

Things to look for:
stride length (some are small which won't work for a normal height person)
adjustable incline
get one with arm motion (handles that move so they are being exercised also)
noise level (you probably won't like something really noisy)
adjustable resistance so you continue to get a workout when the current level becomes too easy
safety features
a good warranty

Before buying, you might want to visit a retailer and try the equipment for at least 10 minutes. It will tell you if you like this one.
