If it is meant to be literal, then how many of you Christians believe in dragons and talking fires?

Cook book?-Are you referring the numerous laws about what is clean or unclean to eat or how to boil a baby (Leviticus, Deuteronomy)?
I think there were many, many years when the majority of people could not even read. So, I guess no one really cared what was literal or figurative.

The Bible is the revealed will of God and to read it you need wisdom and a little common sense too,it is not difficult at all to know what should or should not be taken literally.

I believe you mean term of COOK from financial industry. In that industry, account book is cooked to suite directors need to show the company is making profit while otherwise.
