The smog to which you refer was primarily industrial pollution from manufacturing, factories and the burning of coal gas. One of the primary constituents was sulphur dioxide, a harmful gas that causes many health problems including respiratory conditions.
During the London Smog of 1952 thousands of people were dying each day in the city. The UK government was forced to act and passed the Clean Air Acts, other governments around the world followed suit.
Over the next few years legislation was passed and gradually the sulphur dioxide and other pollutants disipated from the atmosphere.
Ironically sulphur dioxide has a reflective property and reflects sunlight back into space. This is why global temperatures dropped during the middle of the 20th century and why they rose again after the atmosphere was cleaned up.
Climatologists and other scientists are well aware of the properties of sulphur dioxide and a controlled release into the upper atmosphere is one scheme being considered as a means of mitigating global warming.

First off, the smog isn't gone. I still see it hanging over our fair city on some mornings. It has been reduced. This is probably due to those silly liberal clean air and automotive emissions laws that some people love to poke fun at.

What happened was the Clean Air Act, regulating pollutants.
The Supreme Court has now ruled that CO2 is a pollutant and told EPA to either regulate it or explain why not. EPA had tried to do that in the past and the Supreme Court said their past arguments were feeble and invalid.
