You get what you pay for. Simple as that.
Also, cars regularly need maintenance. So an $800 car will still need oil changes every 3000 miles, and if you want the car to last a while, you need all the fluids and mechanisms checked and serviced.
Owning a car is a huge responsibility, and there is a lot more to it than just putting gas in it. If you can't afford a better car, you won't be able to afford any car if you don't take care of it.

Don't count on finding one that easy ( back in the 1960's to give you an idea of car prices ) my experience of 12 yrs in HD Transportation and 5 yrs as a State Contractor , a cheap auto aution operated by City, County Government for impounded vechicles sold as is but it may be a 3,000 LB paper weight or a well maintained car.
If you know a Licensed Mechanic and want to say pay him some money to have him or her go along with you.
But here is what I did ... I bought a decent car with a warranty from a well reptuable car dealership which BTW you can search dealerships that do good business I spent some time searching for a good car, Now my wife wants to have a newer car, I went back to the same place to look at one, but again research it out.
Newer cars are not generally rusted out, also the motor itself if it leaks or smells walk away.
I would go to a regular Dealership like FORD, GM Family, Chrysler / Dodge / Plymouth , if you are a die hard american , if you want say a Subaru , Toyota, Nissan , VW , look around, BTW I have a Sams Club Membership and they offer a Dealer special pricing on their cars.
another thing I reccomend getting a Towing Service like AAA I have AAA Plus RV my wife got stuck in the winter and used it and it paid for itself. I had the service thru my cell carrier I had a timing belt break well that was crazy I was charged $50.00 additional plus the belt, and 1 qt of oil ( I know I checked my dip stick ) waste of money.
and speaking of cell phone If you can get one if your credit isnt enough buy a pre-pay , and if you are really in dire straits 1994 the FCC authourized a bill ( theres a tech name for it ) to allow cell phones without service to have free 911 calls I am not sure of Chicagoland *999 if thats free or not.
If you belong to some church in real absolute hardship cases ( I am not letting you to be mis-lead ) they can decide on giving a person a donated car if its not just a donate for a write off thats a iffy situation there.
overall based on my 30+ yrs between selling Oil , work on cars , Farm Tractor, worked at dealership, and now I am playing with Electronic Engineering also If you know a Auto Engineer ( with a Degree ) Mechanical Engineer , or anyone with a Engineering Degree chances are they know eveything from the designs and flaws.

That would be a great deal! I always looked at the cork board in the front of my grocery store. Sometimes, a person just married or divorced may have no need for their car. Don't expect to find a super bargain at a dealer or a newspaper where ads cost a lot of money.

Check for local car auctions. Look for Goodwill car auctions. Take road trips and wind up and down your area or stray and make an adventure out of it. You may find a bargain out there. A "once in a blue moon special". Where you find someone who really needs to get rid of their vehicle. Also be knowledgeable towards car mechanics so that you don't get someones nightmare. Good Luck.

I would check either the local newspaper or again, like someone else said, a police auction. You can get a great car there for cheap- just make sure you have someone that knows a thing or two about cars to check it out for you so you don't end up with a lemon! Hope that helps!

all i can suggest is shopping around.
We got my Car (a '96 Mitsubishi Mirage) for about 800 dollars and nothing has been wrong with it. The mileage might be high, as long as you have someone reliable and trustworthy check out the car for you, you should have on problems. Place that are worth checking are like, local auctions, such as REPO auctions :)
