I have a TV that can support up to 1080i using component inputs. Is there a way to take advantage of DVD players that can upscale to High Def through HDMI without buying a new TV?

Sorry this isn't an answer, I'm trying to figure out the same thing, and I the normal response to my question is to answer something I didn't ask. To add further details, what does this thing do:

Is it the same as a good receiver? And would either maintain an upconverted signal?

There is this misconception that upconverting DVD players do some magic and you get HD-quality video out of them.
The only thing they do is take 480 lines of standard definition and scale it up. Well, surprise, your HD TV can do perfectly well the same, and probably better.

My recommendation is always to feed a TV the native resolution of the source (in your case 480i) and let the TV do its best to scale the source to the TV's native resolution. This way you avoid scaling in two places: both the player and the TV.
You can also try 480p (if you think your DVD has a better de-interlacer than the TV), but use 1080i only if you bought a very expensive upconverting DVD (with Faroudja, etc.)

Going from HDMI (digital) to component (analog) is not possible and not very useful.

So, no need to buy a new TV. Component video has been used by video professionals for many years and it works just fine.

Are you saying that your TV does not support HDMI?
In that case why do you have a DVD player that upscales?
Seems to me that you should be using the component output of your DVD player into the input of your TV.

Most DVDs will upconvert to 1080i using Component output - check the manual. 1080p is only thru HDMI.
