People are reluctant to change, no-one wants to willingly give up the lifestyles to which they have become accostomed and many people will resent any efforts to try to force them to change or conform.
This isn't necessarily a problem in respect of global warming as there are ways and means of tackling the problem that don't infringe on people's lifestyles. Several schemes currently under investigation are designed to extract CO2 from the atmosphere or to reduce the amount of heat we receive from the sun. If implemented, such schemes would mean the world could carry on as normal. There will of course be a cost but some schemes have a price tag of less than $1 billion, about $0.15 for each person on the planet. Not much to pay to offset global warming and continue as we are.
Urbanisation is a different kettle of fish. The population is growing rapidly and towns and cities can only expand in three directions - upwards, downwards or outwards. Down is impractical and up is expensive, the only feasible option for many is to expand outwards. In the developed nations up is a realistic proposition where land is at a premium so it's no surprise that cityscapes are becoming increasingly lined with skyrise office and accommodation blocks.

Taxation - tax the pips out of limited unrenewable energy like coal gas oil and uranium -
The UK removed the fuel escalator - whereby tax increased year on year ahead of inflation - worse it even lowared tax when crude prices went up - effectivelyu subsidising consumption.
Now, whetheryou agree with GW and it's causes or not matters not - what does matter is that we are not husbanding a very limited supply of very precious materials - Oil is a great raw product for making all sorts of things - plastics, plastics, plastics, pesticides, drugs, tar, lubricants etc.
Stop burning the stuff.

Recently I read a blog on Bhutan. It said though Bhutan is economically much below the line. yet it is ranked as the planet's eighth happiest place, ahead of the U.S and Canada. 72% of the country is still forested.
The solution lies with the Governments. they should stop tampering with Nature. Shun builders and land sharks. No point blaming the common man. re-define progress.
