If you mean by serious, the product people will pay the most for, it is stretched a oil painting on canvass, then and acrylic painting in an oil painting style, , minimum size 30x40 of a subject that meet today's market demand and colors. The price goes up on these when the artist is more reconized.
Water color and pastels command a bit more money than airbrushing, or colored pensil, but the conbination of both of those is what is used by Disney artists. So a lot depends on who you are painting for.

Serious is serious no matter what the medium but did you know there is a real resurgence of pastel painting going on? It used to be the most popular medium but since it was the aristocracy in France who liked it so much the French Revolution kind of killed the joy of pastel painting in the late 18th Century. It is making a huge comeback because it is easy to carry into the fireld, has a wonderful soft effect and it lasts forever.

Serious artists use good quality media and the best paper they can afford. Acid free handmade paper for watercolor is the best. Cheap acrylics look cheap--the colors never look natural. But there is no special media that artists use in preference to others, nowadays. They even make synthetic marble from chips and use molds to make sculpture.

Whatever works for you, anything from ordinary spray paint to oils made from hand ground pigment. The key to your question is "serious" because anybody can use these materials...what do YOU mean by serious?
