Gayathri mantra is the song of SUN; sung by Mother Earth.
Being Brahmanas (not by birth; but by knowledge) are responsible children of Mother, they used to sing it while sunrise and sunset (sandhya kala).
The literal meaning:
------------------------
OM = the divine sound
Bhoo = the planet earth
Bhuvh = all living beings including vegetation & wilderness
Svah = the atmosphere
These three are called “vyahrithi” , are basic elements, collectively recognized as “Mother Earth”. Otherwise it is a planet like other planets in solar system.
This part of mantra introduces the living planet in the universe, which is also known as centre of the Universe, because, only the earth is having the conscious of existence.
---------------------------------------
The second part is known as “Gayathri” because it is a canto (verse) consists 3 lines of 8 letters. (There are so many other verses also e.g. Jagati, Anustup tristup etc.)
--------------------
Tat = that (note the resemblance)
Sivitur = Sun God
Varenyam = my husband
Bargo = with rays
Deva = Oh God
Asya = here
Dhimahi = touch
Dhi yo =by touching
Yonah =the procreation
Prachodayat =be activated
---------------------------------------------------
Free translation of Gayatri:
That Sun God is my husband.
Oh my God, touch me here with your rays. By your touch let the procreation be activated.

The Gayatri mantras are supposed to be secret. They are not supposed to be spoken aloud and are given whispered in the ear by the Guru. Only the Guru can explain the deep meaning within each word of them. It is not considered respectful to the mantra to make a recorded song out of it and even use it as your ringtone or your doorbell. !! If one utters the mantra according to the prescribed rules and following under the guidance of the Guru then the result may be great. I cannot say how many people are able to recieve that result even while trying to follow all the rules involved. Those with a simple non-duplicious heart may get deep realization. There are no doubt many books that can describe this for those who want to hear. Good luck getting answers here. More likely you may be inviting people to do offense to the mantra by making stupid comments. Although Gayatri mantras are secret and need to be practised with many rules, the holy name of the Lord is open and freely available to all, at any time in any place and condition. The silly person who answered that he chants in the toilet, would be OK to chant the Lord's name that way. There are no hard and fast rules. It is the most sublime meditational process in this age of Kali (which lasts 432,000 years). There are mantras for all deities but the maha (topmost) mantra is the Hare Krishna mantra. It may be chanted loudly or softly. One thing I can say about the benefits of Gayatri is that its benefits can take one to the highest planets in the material world and onto Vaikuntha. But it stops there and Harinama takes one beyond Vaikuntha. Harinama is the best medicine for the disease of the heart- Avidya.

Gayatri herself is a Goddess, different from others. All the Sanskrit chantings are devised in such manner, if pronounced scientifically, it absorbs cosmic energy. The Gayatri mantra when chanted properly, it gives you the benefit of pranayama. If some one tells you to do pranayama, you may not do it. If they tell you to do the Gayatri Jap, due to religious reasons, you will do it. Indirectly you are doing the pranayama. whatever our forefathers were doing, there is scientific a reason in it.

I am not a hindu but I do attend vedic chanting classes & also do some chanting as part of my yoga practice. Aum, with the greatest of respect, I have to say that chanting is not just for hindus, but for everybody. (If you haven't tried it & feel drawn to it, give it a go, its wonderful!)
I have always been taught that the Gayatri Mantra is one of the most powerful mantras, known as the 'mother of the vedas.' The ritual exclamation of 'swaha' in the first line, is thought to possess magical powers associated with the goddess Uma. Generally it is a mantra for healing & illumination.

Aum,
Pranaams.Such knowledgeable answers ( except for the brainless jas) U have elicited by your question.
Only one material aspect I shall adduce--
Whereas most other prayers ask for mundane needs (e g 'our daily bread' ) Gayatri mantra prays for a correct direction to the Intellect.
This is unique.
