i have a sony dvd player, with built in 5.1 channel sound system but unfortunantly it does not have optical input. I want to connect a xbox 360 or ps3 to it for sound. Is there ANY way that i can listen to 5.1 sound???

You can buy a coax to optical converter/adaptor for about $20.

Just search the web or go to Radio Shack.

You may be stuck having to use the stereo RCA jack line inputs if the receiver doesn’t have any digital ones. You can turn on the Dolby Pro Logic and adjust the rear speakers' level a few dB and have surround sound. It won’t be quite as realistic as true 5.1 but anything is better than listening in stereo. I am in the same boat you are as I have a HTiB that lacks digital inputs also. I recommend leaving the Pro Logic on for all stereo sources as it sometimes puts backup singers and echos etc. on the rear speakers.
