I say:
Don’t keep it too light on the first date; it's great to talk about political opinions and other serious issues when you're getting to know someone new. How else will you figure out what you have in common? It is just a mattter of not belittling someone else's viewpoints or beliefs.But keep in mind that if you're doing most of the talking, and what you're talking about is mostly negative, you're probably not going to have a second date.
The truth of the matter is just to be yourself. Naturally, everyone wants to be on best manners but that can only last so long. A good date is one where you both talk and listen to each other. Do not play coy or talk dumb. If they are a keeper and the right person, they will respond to the real you. Good Luck!
