And if not, then aren't you really only serving and loving yourself, and not God?

People serve God because they have a true belief that there is a better life after death. Who knows what will happen then. I don't practice organized religion, but I do believe in an afterlife, and I do believe in God.

There IS life after death...back here on earth.
(Revelation 20:12-13) And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. And the dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Ha′des gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.

(Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

(Psalm 37:9) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.

(Psalm 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

(Job 33:25) Let his flesh become fresher than in youth; Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor.’

To be back on the earth, in the flesh, with no wickedness, with youthful skin, and with no death or sickness.
Even the TV show Startrek showed this idea a couple of times, when the crew came across a people who were very peaceful and seemingly unprotected. but in the end they were way above the crew. We eventually will be like that. If we obey God's directions.

Wow. No-one answered with a "no" but I will! I am really, deep down, primarily self-motivated. I love to live my religion because it makes ME happy. It's an added benefit that it makes people around me happy, too... But if I knew there would be no long term consequences for my choices, I would take life by the throat and live it in the very extreme fashion of godless Geminis the world over. I am so very curious and also naturally very selfish. If it weren't for my knowledge of the eternal consequences of choices, I would do just about every self-destructive thing imaginable. I don't think I would hurt anyone else, though. But gee it would be fun to go down in flames laughing all the way!

That said, I've always been concerned about the long term consequences of my choices, so I've always (even as a teen) behaved in a way that would not be destructive to myself or others. Self-control. Honestly, my natural tendancies are to "eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die." I hold on to sanity only because tomorrow, if I die, I won't really be dead!

If God hadn't put down some very firm guidelines, and told me of the consequences of my choices, for sure, I would be playing very fast and loose with my freedom.

Added: Upon further reflection, I realise that a large part of my love (and gratitude) for God stems from my understanding of the glorious future that awaits us in eternity. If I were but a blip in time, there wouldn't be as much of a reason for me to love and worship Him.

Well the question isn't really a valid question because there is life after death and God has given us that, so why ask what if when the "what if" is an impossible situation. When God makes a promise He keeps it.

But I do believe in life after death so why wouldn't I serve Him. Jesus went up to save a place for us in heaven so that we may live with him eternally. God wouldn't just love us then let us just cease to exist.

When there is death after life, what makes you think that there will be no life after death? That's the beauty of the creator and I love Him.

Honestly I do not know if there is life after death with any certainty and I am OK if this is all we have. Either way it has no basis on my love of G-d. He has already done so much for us.

Yes there is life after death. Yes there is a Hell. Yes there is a Heaven. God is the Father and creator of us all. Jesus Christ is the son of God and Savior of us all.
