I am doing a research paper, but everything I find tells me different things. Thanks for helping me out.

Your immune system sees something it doesn't recognize, freaks out, and sends out the troops (IgE, macrophages, etc) to fight it off. This happens often with completely benign stuff like pollen. Result is that the damage is often worse from your own system than from that tiny little pollen.

Search under some immunology sites for allergic reactions. It's much easier to understand after you've had some immunology knowledge. There are 4 different types of allergy, ranging from simple to really serious complications. The ones causing hives is type 1, there are types 1, 2, 3, 4,

When one consumes something that does not suit one's chemistry, it responds with an allergic reaction!
