Measure using a non-contacting IR thermometer - available from many sources, even from auto tool catalogues. Different solders have different melting temperatures depending on the alloy composition.

Solder pots were used in determination of the plasticity of heated coal. The temperature is raised to melt the solder and after the sample is inserted the temperature is raised still further. The device is called a "Gieseler Plastometer" and was routinely used in coal testing laboratories. The temperature was measured by a thermocouple inside a metal (probably steel) shield.
