Did the Jew's believe Jesus was the Messiah? If they did why did they kill him? If all of this is true why are they still waiting for the Messiah if they believe they killed him?

Q 4:157. That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-

Thanks mixed the Qu'ran for a fact does say that and the why should be obvious. Muhammad was not perfect but made obvious mistakes.

Mixed in the Christian faith we are all responsible therfore it truly makes no difference. My question was not to place blame on who killed Jesus but to ask why Allah thought the Jew's who killed him called him the Messiah?

lavender I was not asking if the Jews killed Jesus as the Qu';ran does say they were made to think they did...My real question is why are they calling him the Messiah...they did nto believe he was the Messiah...why does the Quran say they said we have killed the Messiah?

2007-06-01 20:06:40 · update #3

Ahmed, Allah said "they said we have killed the Messiah"...Allah misquoted them to honer Jesus? Allah lied? Allah clearly says they said this...but they really didnt say this?

Mixed Blessing wouldn't it have been more respectful to refer to a man known as the truth with the truth? I'm sure God could have been respectful and remained honest.

Hello djmantx
That they said, “We slew the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, the messenger of God”-yet they did not slay him neither crucified him, only a likeness of that which was shown to them.”

This is clear one of Muhammed's misunderstandings from the Gospel. We can see he wrote: THEY said and WE killed, which points to the Jews. God would not make this mistake. Jews asked for Jesus's death for him calling himself the Son of God. They did not believe he is the Messiah, so Muhammed is wrong here.

Jesus' death is also recorded in the Talmud, which is hardly a friend to Christianity. Despite the Biblical truths and even outside historical writings (such as Josephus and Tacitus), the Muslims still adhere to the view that someone else was crucified in His place.

Muslims say: How can God punish an innocent person especially one who is His own Son? What needs to be asked is how can God justify changing someone else to look like Jesus and have him be crucified in his place for crimes he did not commit. By making another to look like A’isa, Jesus and have others believe this is deliberately deceptive.

Mani an Iranian philosopher and false prophet/apostle originated in Persia in the early 200’s was also involved on Gnosticism. It was Mani who believed that someone was crucified by the Jews in place of Jesus, the same as the teaching of the Qur'an (Surah 4.157)

"Not a single one of the Christians was a witness with them..."

..is truly a lie, all one has to do is read the Gospel accounts which state that John was standing by the cross and heard the words that Jesus spoke. Mary (Jesus mother), other women, and even Peter may had been there at a distance. What is implied by this statement of Ibn and the Qur'an's Sura is that one can't be sure that Jesus really died when His Mother and some apostles were there. Despite the fact that the Roman soldiers were experts in killing and had to complete their duties faithfully under penalty of death. To say on the day of judgment it will be proven that those who believe Jesus died will be proven false is to reject not only the whole New Testament but the Old Testament as well.

Muslims fail to acknowledge Christ's fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies in the minutest detail. Throughout the gospels Jesus states he will be delivered up to be killed.

John the prophet in Jn.1:29 introduces Jesus to Israel as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Clearly a reference to the Old Testament typology of the sacrifices made to cover sin, especially the Passover. And he is described by John the apostle in Rev.1:18 as the living one, “I Am he who lives, and was dead and behold I am alive forever more.”

That quote is only found in the Qur'an, not the bible.

The jewish people do not believe that they killed the Messiah, for the very same reason you stated.

They are still waiting for their Messiah, as far as they are concerned Jesus Christ was not the Messiah. If the Qur'an states that, I cannot explain why.

And not for one moment as a Christian, was I taught that Muslims killed Jesus.
I was not also ever taught explicitly that Jews killed Jesus either, I know now it was mentioned in the Bible, but it was never something we focused on.

I don't think which race did it, really mattered, just that it happened.

Wow, I have been truly blessed and educated today, I did not even know that this quote was in the Qur'an, and that some believe it may have been an error using the word "Messiah", although it was out of respect. I have learned .. Thank you

I think you've got it all wrong:

The Jews believe that Jesus son of Mary (PBHU) was a Messiah Cheat; an Anti-Christ. The fact is that he was the true Messiah (Christ). When Jews speak about Jesus (PBUH), they call him Joshua bar Joseph (Jesus son of Joseph "The Carpenter").

When Jews claimed that they've killed Jesus, they did not believe he was the true Messiah...they have their own Messiah, but Allah has dictated that Jesus is the Messiah; the true Messiah.

Therefore when Allah informs us that the Jews said they killed Jesus He said what He said to honour Jesus and give him his true status. Read the verse carefully...you'll find that Allah honours his prophet Jesus (PBUH) and Allah supports the following:

1- That Jesus was the true Messiah, unlike what the Jews say that he was a Messiah cheat.

2- Jesus is the son of Mary, not the son of Joseph the Carpenter and Mary together.

3- Jesus was a true prophet of Allah, and not an imposter or an Anti-Christ.

4- Jesus was neither killed nor crucified, and the fact is that he was raised and resided (and he still resides) in the Fourth Heaven; where he'll stay there till he is commanded by Allah to descend and kill the Anti-Christ of the Jews, and then rule the Muslims as their last Caliph. The Jews are proud of being behind the alleged crucifixion of Jesus (PBUH). Some Jews believe that Herod Antipas was the one who crucified Jesus.

5- Allah reveals to us that Jesus crucifixion was a matter of dispute among the people of his time and the first generations that followed. This was because the one that was arrested was arrested in secret and quickly, the Jewsih rabbis did not know him personally, the Jews had to give him to the Romans who did not know him, the death sentence was very quick and its implementation was quicker (as it was on Friday and the Jews had to bury him before 6:00 PM). In fact many verses in the NT proves that Jesus' followers never witnessed the crucifixion, and he later came to them in flesh and not in spirit (which makes it impossible that he died) and to prove this, Jesus demonstrated his being alive by eating food in front of his dicsiples.

So although Jews say bad things about Jesus, Allah honoured his prophet by not repeating the ugly words they said about him. Allah purified the reputation of His messenger by denying him to have a father (which would've been a disgrace for both Jesus and his honorable and chaste virgin mother), He called him Messiah to prove that he was the authentic Messiah, and He called him the messenger of Allah. Would not Allah be praised??!! A Glorious god indeed!

No. Politicians killed Jesus. He was a rabble-rouser and they felt threatened.

Some of them happened to be Jews. But then, Jesus was a Jew. As far as the Roman backing; hey, it was a local issue and the Romans were pretty tied up pushing the concept of Civilization throughout the Orbis Terrarum.

Sad to say, but without the martyrdom of Christ, most of his teachings would not have spread. Just like now days, the compelling story is carried on the news; if it bleeds, it leads.

I'm an agnostic, but judging from many other cultures and religions, the success of Christianity was a plus for humans.

No, I don't blame the Jews. That would be like saying the British were bad in the American Revolution: all of the Founding Fathers WERE British subjects, after all... and Americans and British, like the Jews and Christians, have patched up their differences.

Jews did not kill Jesus... Romans did. Jews do not believe Jesus was the messiah because he did not mean the criteria for the messiah under Jewish law.

If anyone bothered to learn Hebrew and know Jewish law they would understand why we do not believe he is the messiah.

IN islam we belive the following.

157 That they said (in boast) "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary the Apostle of Allah"; but they killed him not nor crucified him but so it was made to appear to them and those who differ therein are full of doubts with no (certain) knowledge but only conjecture to follow for of a surety they killed him not. 663
158 Nay Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power Wise. 664
159 And there is none of the People of the Book but must believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Judgment He will be a witness against them. 665

663 The end of the life of Jesus on earth is as much involved in mystery as his birth, and indeed the greater part of his private life, except the three main years of his ministry. It is not profitable to discuss the many doubts and conjectures among the early Christian sects and among Muslim theologians. The Orthodox Christian Churches make it a cardinal point of their doctrine that his life was taken on the Cross, that he died and was buried, that on the third day he rose in the body with his wounds intact, and walked about and conversed, and ate with his disciples, and was afterwards taken up bodily to heaven. This is necessary for the theological doctrine of blood sacrifice and vicarious atonement for sins, which is rejected by Islam. But some of the early Christian sects did not believe that Christ was killed on the Cross. The Basilidans believed that some one else was substituted for him. The Docetae held that Christ never had a real physical or natural body, but only an apparent or phantom body, and that his Crucifixion was only apparent, not real. The Marcionite Gospel (about A.D. 138) denied that Jesus was born, and merely said that he appeared in human form. The Gospel of St. Barnabas supported the theory of substitution on the Cross. The Quranic teaching is that Christ was not crucified nor killed by the Jews, notwithstanding certain apparent circumstances which produced that illusion in the minds of some of his enemies: that disputations, doubts, and conjectures on such matters are vain; and that he was taken up to Allah

664 There is difference of opinion as to the exact interpretation of this verse. The words are: The Jews did not kill Jesus, but Allah raised him up (rafa'u) to Himself. One school holds that Jesus did not die the usual human death, but still lives in the body in heaven, which is the generally accepted Muslim view. (4.158)

665 Before his death: Interpreters are not agreed as to the exact meaning. Those who hold that Jesus did not die refer the pronoun "his" to Jesus. They say that Jesus is still living in the body and that he will appear just before the Final Day, after the coming of the Mahdi, when the world will be purified of sin and unbelief. There will be a final death before the final Resurrection, but all will have believed before that final death. Others think that "his" is better referred to "none of the People of the Book", and that the emphatic form "must believe" (la-yu' minanna) denotes more a question of duty than of fact

Nope I don't believe for a second that they killed Jesus the Messiah (PBUH). Everyone will see the truth when he returns to kill the antichrist (the false jewish messiah, the imposter)

When Prophet Isa (PBUH) was 33 years old, the blasphemers among the offspring of Israel plotted to kill him, but Allah saved him from their harm.

"And the Jews were punished because they said: 'We killed the Christ, Jesus son of Mary, who was a Messenger of God'; but they neither killed him nor crucified him, though it so appeared to them. Those who disagree in the matter are only lost in doubt. They have no knowledge of it other than conjecture, for surely they did not kill him." (Quran 4:157-158)

Prophet Isa/Jesus (PBUH) was in session with twelve of his elite companions in a house. He told them that among them would be who would blaspheme in the future. Then he asked them, "Who among you would want to be made to look like me, be killed in my place, and be my companion in Paradise." The youngest among them stood up and said, "Me." Prophet Isa told him to sit, then repeated his same question. Again, the same young man said, "Me." Again, Prophet Isa told him to sit, then again asked the same question. After the same young man volunteered for the third time, Prophet Isa received the Revelation that this young man would be the one who would be made to look like him and killed instead of him. Prophet Isa was raised to the sky from an opening in the ceiling of the house. When the Jews came after Prophet Isa, they saw that young man, whom Allah made to look like Isa. They took him, thinking he was Prophet Isa, and crucified him.

Allah will send the Messiah, son of Maryam, and he will descend to the white minaret in the East of Damascus, wearing two garments dyed with saffron, placing his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, beads of perspiration will fall from it, and when he raises his head, beads like pearls will scatter from it.
He will kill the Dajjal, an ugly, evil blasphemer who claims himself as God, and who misleads many people to blaspheme. Prophet Isa (PBUH) will perform Hajj and travel to visit the grave of the Prophet (PBUH) to salute him, and to greet him by saying, "As-salamu ^alaykum ya rasul Allah", as narrated by Abu Dawud at-Tayalisiyy and others.
