It's English. But America caters to the lazy and unqualified now so English speaking and hard working qualified Americans need not apply. One of the many reasons this country is going down.

Bilingual, as in dominating two languages. If you meet the qualifications for a job requiring you communicate with monolingual or bilingual customers or clients, then apply. If you don't qualify, you don't meet those requirements. It's just a skill you can possess or not. In Europe, typically many jobs demand knowledge in a second language or languages (if not full competency).

There's nothing wrong with bilingualism - and although English is the common language, it does not mean other languages are not admissible to the linguistic domain of this nation.

Truth there is no national language in the U.S.. But English has always been the universal language in the country for over 500 plus years.

There is no discrimination against the spanish speaking person, anymore than there is against whites, blacks, native americans, asians, india indians, or even the bilingual or multi lingual people. They all get disqualified or not hired at any job they might apply for at some time or another.

English is our official language, When the British took over the country prior to 1776, to keep indians from loosing their lives they were forced to speak English or be considered a hostile group because they refused to conform to Christianity and speak the English language so since 1690 the official language is English (forced) but that is most commonly spoken. Many of the jobs you see ask for bilingual especially in financial institutions, international corporations, and public relation jobs. There are several places here in NC that request bilingual speaking people. One part of the city they are looking for someone that is bilingual in Laotian, and there is Bank of America that is looking for those that are bilingual in several Middle Eastern dialects. Biligual doesn't always mean Spanish/English. I speak both and when I was looking for work I applied for several jobs that required biligual as one of the job criteria and when I applied to some of them were looking for a different language. Many companies know that there is an untouched market for different cultures and if you can speak the language for that group you will be able to increase your consumers list and make more money nationally or internationally. I have been able to speak, read, and write Spanish for 22yrs and no one in my family can speak another language. I took it in high School and furthered my knowledge through college and took jobs where others spoke it as well to be more fluent. Back then they taught Castillian Spanish (Spain) and I learned many different styles from working with people from other Hispanic Cultures. My best friend lives in Indiana and speaks French (France) but deals with more people from Canada and other French Provinces. She learned more the same as I did. I can speak a little French, German, and Italian just because I took jobs through the years that dealt with different cultures and it opened my eyes to how great it is to learn knew cultures and languages. It also opened my eyes to how great this country is for it's diversity not only because we are Americans but what makes us Americans!

I think it should be english. I understand that the USA is a melting pot, but you have to have some assimilation, and some feeling of a national "family". When my grandparents came here, they did not expect everyone to learn Polish, or to teach their children in their language, or have signs in their language, nor did they sing the national anthem in Polish! They learned English, and assimilated. They worked hard, and did not expect things to be handed to them. I think its insulting to the US for immigrants to not learn and use the english language.

The USA doesn't have an official language. The Founding Fathers deliberately decided against establishing one, although German and English were considered. The most common language spoken is English, but many other languages are spoken as well: Korean, Spanish, Vietnamese, Farsi, Russian, Arabic, German, and Chinese just to name a few.

At your place, I would begin to lear Mandarin too... Spanish will become old history when China will dominate the world. Most south American countries provides Mandarin class in primary schools, I guess they will be much better prepared to make money with them than our side...
