Yes, very very good analogy!

I always used "Why do adults care about pedophilia?", but I like yours better :)

~In your inane attempt to be clever you have missed the boat entirely. If Pollyanna had read Nostradamus, she'd have been with Randall McMurphy in the Cuckoo's nest. Atheists don't care about religion; they understand that weak people need a psychological crutch to explain and justify their own personal shortcomings and the abysmal failure of mankind in general. What they care about is that the crutch is a panacea used to avoid doing what needs to be done in order to find and achieve solutions. They understand that the solutions to the world's problems have to be attained by Man, and reliance on some ghostly super-being only retards the ability to arrive at those solutions (particularly when the devotees of the separate deities claim that their godhead wishes the annihilation (or conversion) of those who drink at a different bar). Pavlovian responses don't work in a thinking society. Locke and Jefferson pointed that out rather clearly.

Peaceniks care about war in the same sense: they would have Man solve his problems by some sane and rational process rather than by bullets and bloodshed. Dieticians would have one prolong life and enhance health by consumption of non-toxic foods. Conservationists would have one consider the impact of building a stripmall on a flyway older than mankind. Why should we live in adequately sized homes on rational lots if we can bring about the extinction of entire species of flora and fauna by building mansions and estates to flaunt our wealth? Why not nuke the bastards back to the stone age if diplomacy can work as well? Why not clog your arteries and die at 60 when you could eat right and lead a healthy and productive life into your eightys or ninetys? Why try to lead a just, ethical and honorable life when you can blame the BMFWIC in the sky for you foibles?

Why do those with a brain and a modicum of common sense answer mindless and thoughtless questions? I guess for those of us afflicted with the Don Quixote chromosome, we'll keep tilting with windmills in the hopes that maybe just once we can prevail. It is a slow and painful process, but for each eye that is opened, we step one step closer to sanity and reason. From there, justice and brotherhood can finally be within our grasp.

You must have inkling of that of which I speak. In your foolishly juxtaposed cunundrums, you wonder why the one's with the answers (the peacenik, the dietician, the conservationist) are concerned about the problems (war, trans fats, urban sprawl and polution). The answer is clear. Those who are concerned for the health and well being of their fellow man address the problems and try to offer rational, safe and beneficial solutions. Ergo, the atheist must be concerned about religion. It is axiomatic, is it not?

Given the choice between Howard Roark or Jesus Christ, I'll take Roark every time.

I was going to answer this question but, having read the response from "Oscar H.", I realized that he said it all...and much more eloquently than I could.

Pollyanna reading Nostradamus. Now that's a scary thought. Kudos to you Oscar! Locke and Jefferson would be proud of you. It seems to me, that you need not chose between Roark and J.C. You have already achieved Roarkdom!

May Goobleskeera bless you and keep your cup always on the altar of Pimponious.

To be honest with you, it's like asking why do healthy people care about sick people...

and the answer is 'to give advice about cures in order to stop the spread of their afflictions.'

People of religion are concerned that atheists are "traveling" down the wrong road and are in need of correction. Could it possibly be that atheist believe people of religion are "traveling" down the wrong road and are in need or correction.

Quite so. Why do psychologists care about feelings? Why do homeowners care about asbestos? Why do Christians care about Job?...

Oh, wait. They don't. That's right. Bast*rd got what was coming to him.

I have a few more...

Why do non smokers care about smokers?

Why do mothers care about drunk drivers?

Why do cops care about crime?

Why do firemen care about fires?

Why do doctors care about disease?

These examples are just a few off the top of my head that only increase the validity of your point.

Cheers!

Peaceniks don't _care_ about war. They fight against war. They _care_ about peace.
