i am probably considered a athiast(i think thats what its called) because I dont have a religion, although my parents are christian, but there are times that i question what every church does to people, because if you think about it, the pastor or w/e brainwashes you into not sinning or doing bad things, but there is no way that anyone can "not" sin. no one is perfect, no is like the flanders of the simpsons. i just dont get why people take there religion seriously. to tell you the truth, i think we came from aliens or something, not adam and eve, because if that was true, (if they had kids and ther kids had kids....) we would all be retarded.

I really like what CJohn and some of the others had to say, but since I spent so much time thinking about this and typing this up, here's my answer, anyway ....

Flanders' life is too hard to live up to.

Regardless of our religion or lack thereof, most of us seek to have a happy life. That's why we do silly things like justify our bad behavior (we don't want to believe we're bad people!), and we seek to gain forgiveness when we know we're wrong. Sooo....
WHY do people have religion? In a nutshell? To have a happier life.
I will try to avoid particular religions, but speak in general, Universal Truth, as it may, I think there are many reasons, but here's a few.
Religion offers:
1) Hope.
2) Redemption. It's hard to forgive ourselves. Most people like to believe they live by some sort of moral and ethical code. But just like Flanders, our own ideals can be difficult to live by.
3) Less fear of dying. (I didn't say NO fear!) In fact, religion, I think, helps us have less fear in various ways.
4) Feeling of acceptance, belonging; that fellowship that happens among people of common purpose.
HTH!
I honestly hope you'll find what YOU are searching for. I've always been told that if you read the Bible with an open mind, that you will find the answers you're looking for. Now wouldn't THAT be a blast!

Your alright. Don't give up your search. I am a Christian and I don't go to just any church. And surely I don't believe my religion centers around me thats what I was doing before God. I had more of the mind set of you before I committed my life to CHrist. It was a deal between He and I not any preacher, teacher, or friend, or Church. I wanted the real deal. Keep it live and keep it real. CHurch hop to some that are truly in it. I love a Church with a great band and seeing people who have been radically converted and that are working in people's lives. But mostly ask God to put a hunger and a passion to truly get to know Him in your heart. If you go after it and not just fight against Him but truly get your answers you will see this life in CHrist is like nothing you could ever imagine.

I'm going to try to answer all of your questions. This'll take some time but here goes.
People absorb themselves in their religion for strength - like gangstas do. They get spiritual strength and knowledge of God through fellowship with others of their religion and through hearing the word of God taught and preached.

If God can't brainwash people into not sinning, no human preacher can. I think you've picked up a negative view of a very positive thing there.

But you're correct in one thing; there is no way anybody can not sin - on their own. That's where God comes in. Through His Holy Spirit He's able to help us to not sin in ways we can't do ourselves. And if we happen to slip or fall and do something we shouldn't, He's there to help us back up again.
And His mercy, grace and forgiveness is an ongoing process.

People take their religion seriously for several reasons. Some just don't want to go to hell. Some are looking for something real they can hang on to. Some are looking for help with an addiction. Some just go with the flow and do what everybody else is doing. I've even known of guys going to church to meet chicks that are less likely to have HIV/AIDS. There are lots of good reasons to take your religion seriously. But remember one thing: religion is man reaching out to God. Christianity is God reaching out to man.
About Adam and Eve. It's genetics. Couple one (Adam & Eve) had a VERY deep gene pool - like, oceanic. They got it on and their kids got it on and everybody was getting it on all over the place making babies and the kids were all strong and healthy because of the deep gene pool. Then there was the flood of Noah. Only eight people survived. Well, they started multiplying, still, the gene pool was pretty deep.
When the gene pool started thinning out, God told Moses to put a stop to people intermarrying within families. That was to stop (or slow down at least) the kids being retarded and deformed.
Well, now the gene pool is so shallow and guys are having babies they don't even know they have that are getting into parenthood together and look at the problems we're having with deformities and retardation.
Hope I've been able to help clear up your questions.

You are not an Atheist. At least by what you say. You seem to be an Agnostic. That is; you don't know about God and you are not so brainwashed as to think that there cannot be a God.

You are right, there is no way that anyone cannot sin, the Christian claim, and that is also the claim that I make, is that Jesus was the only one who did not sin. That's what a Christian is according to the Bible, so we are not all like Flanders.

So those who call themselves Christian think that they have and obligation to make you think that they've become something wonderful, when someone like me has no interest in convincing you of anything that you aren't being convinced of by God.

So I think that you are right about the 'religious' , they have not only God's rules to live by, but also they have allowed themselves to live by the rules of whatever church they belong to. I don't believe in that crap. It's makes people all messed up. I would rather look at what God says and understand it. I'm more interested in what he thinks of me, than what the church thinks of me.

No, when Adam and Eve were alive the gene pool was not contaminated with mutations and other defects so their children would have been perfectly normal.

Umm...logic is lacking in your argument in my view but you know, at least you are thinking about it. My suggestion is, read about different philosophies and religions and see what they are about before cementing your judgement.

Good luck searching.

As for if you are an athiest, I dont think so. Athiests are shown many 'evidence' and stiill conclude that they cant be convinced. You just seem to not heard any evidence. I think you just have no stance..lol

It's much easier to follow a Dogma than to work on your innerself. It's easier to follow a leader than be your own... what do you think?
