I am not a doctor so I cannot recommend prescriptions, however, my friend who is a doctor told me that he prescribes Benadryl for sleeping. It usually works pretty well and isn't expensive. My friend likes to stay away from drugs because they are generally addictive but when the Benadryl doesn't work he resorts to regular medication. If your sleeping problem doesn't go away soon see an MD because the lack of sleep can cause all sorts of physical and mental problems. Incidentally, when I can't fall asleep I usually read for awhile. Watching TV or going on the computer doesn't do it for me. Warm milk can help. Do not drink tea or coffee before bedtime because they contain caffeine. No chocolate either. Oh yes. Melatonin can also be useful. It isn't a prescription drug and it is not habit forming. I take it once in awhile especially when I am traveling and want to fight jet-lag.

Yoga. Deep breathing-- slowly in through the nose, out through the mouth, all to a count of ten or more. Close your eyes while doing it and make sure the room is dark. If noises from the street or in the house bother you, play some very soft meditation type of music or sounds of the sea. Stay in bed, rest is better than nothing when you cannot sleep.
Set an alarm before you go to bed, and get up when it goes off. try drinking some milk that you heated slightly with a dash of salt., and 2 saltines about 15 minutes before bed.
Then brush your teeth. Good Luck!

My immediate suggestion would be to buy some melatonin. It's an over-the-counter pill that helps your brain produce the chemicals your body uses to fall asleep.
It might be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor at this point, especially if sleep-deprivation is interfering with your daily activities. Your doctor may be able to help you figure out what's causing your insomnia or prescribe something stronger than melatonin to help you sleep.
Good luck.

Do not exercise 2 hours before bed. No not eat large meals before bed. No caffeine for 6 hours before bed. Bed is for sleeping and sex only. No homework, office work, etc. If wake up. Leave room for 20 min and do something really boring then come back. Do not lay in bed more than 20 min awake. Get up after 20 min of being awake and do something else. Bed is not meant to toss and turn in.

If you can't sleep and your mind is wondering, one of the effective solutions is to get out of bed and engage in activities followed by lengthy periods of restlessness until you feel sleepy and go to bed.

Changing lifestyle habit if any such as avoiding intake of caffeine before bedtime and engaging in relaxing activities before bedtime.

One important point is that do not self prescribe and medications associated with sleeping. If you have prolong sleeping problem, seek a pharmacist or doctor's advice where they might prescribe certain pills to ease your problem.

Well, I can't sleep and this is what I'm doing. I usually read something to shut down my brain. Sometimes I can't turn my brain off because I have a problem or concern. If that is the case, I try to come up with a solution to my issue. Good luck and sweet dreams.

Since I don't like to put myself to sleep, I will watch TV and do stuff as drawing or painting until I get really tired that my body has to automatically go in sleep mode.
