Depends on how old they are.

Fact is you can make a great vacation for kids out of almost any location if you plan it right. Stop relying on attractions and start with your mind. Kids are like sponges, you need to stimulate both their mind and body.

Good for you to rule out Disneyland or Disneyworld. Both are nice and have their place, but you do a disservice to your kids by building their vacation around them.

I have no idea why everyone's ideas center around finding ways to keep you busy on a cruise or in an area with lots of people. Try something like white water rafting. Adventure Magazine from May has A LOT of great ideas for kids of all ages. If you specify the ages i'd be happy to give you more ideas for a memorable vacation. Of all the vacations I went on as a kid, Disney and Myrtle beach were the worst, I don't advise them for kids over 10.

I really like richard t's answer! Another suggestion is Myrtle Beach SC. It has a beach and it is an activity that is free! They also have a theme park (family kingdom), the SC Children's Museum, Ripley's Aquarium, Ripley's believe it or not,Alligator Adventure, Several putt-putt places, Para sailing, Deep Sea fishing and outlet malls for you and golf for dad. Pay the extra money and stay ocean front or for a less busy beach stay in Cherry Grove or N. Myrtle Beach...you can rent a house there!

And no Wally World. Take them camping and plan it out well. More then anything it is the experience they will remember. Do fun things and go to a nice camping area, cook over an open fire pit, talk under the stars bright above. Be together and work together to make it a lasting memory

No Disneyland or Disney World?
How about a Disney Cruise? Lots of stuff for the kids, plus awesome things to keep the adults occupied as well. The price isn't bad either.

Choose cruises, and choose Disney as the cruise line. Put in your dates and there you go....

I usually woudn't recommend this, but cruise ships provide a change of scenery, activities for the kids and tannign time (+shopping) for you.
