Start with a little history to talk about how the measurement of blood pressure was first done. (The story involves the carotid artery of a horse and a tube - very gross - perfect for high school.)
Then look up Korotkoff (Russian doctor who described the sounds used to determine blood pressure.)
Next, go into the terminology associated with recording blood pressure (systolic, diastolic) and the normal values (for adults and children - they aren't the same.)
Talk about the importance of measuring blood pressure and the diseases that can result from high blood pressure (hypertension.)
Then demonstrate the process of measuring blood pressure and let everyone try it.
If that doesn't take 45 minutes - talk slower!

Blood pressure measurements don't count for anything if you've been walking around. Ideally, you should be sitting down for at least 5 minutes or so. Blood pressure also can vary during the day, so it's best to get measurements from similar times during the day. No caffeine in the morning either. These measurements should be repeated on a few separate occasions. Some people get "white coat hypertension" when they go to the doctor's office because they are nervous. Probably blood pressure medicines wouldn't kill you. But you don't necessarily need blood pressure medicines if your blood pressure is only high while active. When doctors study the effects of high blood pressure, they study the effects of people who are diagnosed with it as described above. You are probably at no higher cardiac risk from your blood pressure.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

blood pressure measurements are:low normal, normal, and high normal. most poeple are in thenormal level which is 139/89. 140/90 is borderline or high normal. Two parameter are involve: systolic and diastolic, systolic is thecontraction of the myiocardium and diastolic is the relaxation. during this period of time you can take the BP in the sitting position, standing and laying down for different readings and research. The most accurate is sitting down.
Procedure to take BP: first find the pressure site with your index and middle digits. never use your thumb, then place the pressure cuff with the indication on the artery and place it tight firmly, the sthetoscope ear piece must be placed forward inside your ears not backward like most people do to avoid false reading including your heart beat being confused with the patients. feel for pulse and place the bell directly on top, apply light pressure against the skin, the pump air to 160 only, wait 2 secs and if no readings release 5psi/2 secs, and continue until u get reading and so forth until you get both sys and dias. if dealing with a hypertensive patient after pumping 160 you get a heart beat, continue to 180, and wait 2 secs, and so until u dont get a reading the start releasing10psi/2sec only. with hypertensive patients you want to have an accurate reading the first time to avoid second attempts. if attempts is not successful the first time switch arms do not repeat the same arm. good luck in your assigment.

You can research how a sphgymomanometer (BP device) works and explain how it works first then demonstrate how to properly take blood pressure.
Also what you are measuring for (i.e. systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, why they read it 120/80, how to read it, what readings are normal, etc.)
Look up info about cardiology and blood pressure, find out the reason behind it and why it is measured and go from there.

After explaining in detail how blood pressure is recorded with a sphygmomanometer, explain to the class a few extra points like in children B.P. is recorded by tying the cuff to the thigh and diaphragm of stethoscope in popliteal foss ie the hollow behind the knee. You can also explain that among adults if B.P. in lower extremity is lower it diagnoses a block in Aorta like Coarctation of Aorta. The pulse in arm has its eqivalent as pulse of DORSALIS PEDIS artery in feet. This pulse is felt just on the highest point on foot about 2 to 3 inches from web between great toe and second toe.. Latly you can explain that thick fat on forearm or thigh can give a wrong reading of BP.

Hi
You might want to talk about
1) what afeects blood pressure (weight, salt, drugs, stress)
2 )Effects of high blood pressure (heart attack, angina, stroke, etc)
3) What medications are used to treat blood pressure.
(beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, Calcium channel inhibitors)
All can be found all over the web and would make a great balanced presentation.
Good Luck!

you can talk about the dangers of high/low bp. what affects your bp. comparison of bp among animals...it just depends on how sophisticated you want to get. if you follow esravol's suggestions, you're going to find PLENTY of interesting info to present
(fyi: bp doesn't scale w/in species)
