Your voice is an instrument, too. You'll need to learn how to play it properly, too, and that requires some mastery of the vocal instrument, intellectually and physically.
For instance: You tune your guitar each time you play it. You learned every note on the fretboard, you learned how to make chords, you learned scales. Proper posture, proper finger positioning (proper nail care!) Practice and more practice. It involved your body as well as your mind.
You'll need to learn many of the same things to use your voice instrument successfully as well.
Your vocal instrument is primarily about breath control and the well-developed musculature needed to gain that control.
Vocal scales help, but not if you just blast off every time.
An experienced vocal coach should be able to teach you how to go about your preparation and present you with a series of effective challenges to overcome.
But it's equally important to find a coach that works well for the style of music you want to do.
Don't hire an opera coach if you want to make soul records.
Don't hire a broadway showtunes coach if you to be a rocker.
Ultimately, if you're serious about singing, you'll become your own best critic, and you won't settle for mediocrity if you want your vocal skills to at least equal your guitar skills.

Voice coaches do help, but believe it or not you may get more of a thorough understanding from reading a book and analyzing your own flaws. You can work at your own pace, as well, which helps tremendously. Voice coaches are too expensive. Try the book "Singing for Dummies." Don't let the the title fool you. It comes with an audio cd which contain voice excercises. You can read all the reviews on amazon.com, as well as take a peek inside the book, if you are not completely convinced by the reviews.

OK, FIND a good vocal coach and then ALTERNATE vocal lessons w/ guitar lessons. Each guitar lesson LOAD up on stuff to practice: learn ALL your 9th chords, minor 7th chords IN EVERY KEY. LEARN ALL YOUR diminished and augmented chords IN EVERY KEY. OK, find a vocal coach and ask for references from satisfied students. bREATHING EXERCISES should be included to strenthen the diaphragm, which is where the power and depth of your tone comes from. HEY, find a vocal coach who wants to TRADE lessons with YOU and LEARN GUITAR??!! Sing along with stuff on the radio, ipod....JOIN A CHOIR and get ACTUAL EXPERIENCE SINGING WITH OTHERS...church, community, school...listen to all sorts of famous singers like Aretha, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Otis Redding...the more singers you listen to, the more versatile you will become and not one dimensional....the best singers SANG A LOT and had lots of vocal influences/idols/heroes...JOIN A CHOIR AND SING A LOT WHEREVER YOU CAN but get a vocal coach and trade lessons and just practice guitar more on your own by learning ALL YOUR CHORDS, even if you think "you won't need augmented or 9th chords." The more versatile you are, the better! YOU CAN DO IT> YOU GOT GOOD ON GUITAR, DIDN'T YOU? HOW? BY PUTTING IN TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Believe it or not ,,singing alone in the car helps,,,,
noboby else can hear you,and you can sing as loud as you want, for as long as you want......
Just choose the music you prefer to sing,as long as the car has a good CD player...good luck
