If you just have trouble getting to sleep, the regular ambien is awesome. What's great is it just went generic and you can save about 40 bucks a bottle.
Ambien CR is for if you have trouble staying asleep. FYI you may have slight halucinations with ambien and a good side effect they don't tell you on the box is that there is a window of time as the ambien is hitting you that makes for incredible sex. It's so true.

I have had insomnia for many years. I was taking sleep meds, but now I am getting nightly sleep without sleep meds
I take 3mg Melatonin (I cleared this with my doctor) This does help
I smell Lavender flowers before I go to bed, this stuff really does help me go to bed. I have some of the lavender flowers in a bowl and I smush some before I go to bed and smell it (don't eat it) and then I go sleepytime.
I exercise daily - I sleep better if I get more exercise.
I try to unwind in the few hours before bedtime, studies have shown that the light from the monitor and tv sets can interfere with sleep. Relaxing does help you sleep better.
That's what I do. I don't take Ambien or Lunesta anymore.

Try "out of body" meditation. Relax every muscle in your body one at a time, focus your mind to think of nothing. If a thought starts to come in, push it out. This will have one of two effects, either you will go into an out of body state or you will fall asleep.

Just to add some advice: before trying prescription drugs, I would try benedryl or nyquil (probably benedryl first). They're over the counter and have minimal side effects other than the drowsiness.

depend on your activities.. usually if you undergoes heavy activity for a day, your body will fell exhausted, & need time to stabilise. your mind will tell your body to get some rest by sleep.. sometimes it depend on the external factors; weather, drugs.. all these factors will stimulate your brain to tell your body to sleep...
