I have, from Albany NY to Albuquerque NM.
First class compartment, my own valet, a little bed, tv, breakfast brought to me... and access to the most awesome first class lounge in the world at Union Station in Chicago. I had a blast! Met a lot of extremely nice people, and that train had the viewing carriage. It's all windows, and the sights were amazing. It's a fantastic way to travel. Expensive though for first class, but coach is fun too. I'd do it again in a minute.

I traveled from north Alabama to New Orleans on Amtrack. I loved being able to get up and move around while covering miles. Beat the stew out of having to take rest breaks. I didn't see any of the sleep compartments, so I can't tell you what those were like. I think that sounds like a fun way to travel. Might as well give it a try.

I agree with everything that jxt had to say except that it definitely depends on the person.. I took the Snow Train once and it is a 6 & 1/2 hour round trip...I only enjoyed the first 3 (maybe less) hours and I was ready to be Done !!! There's only so many places to go when you need to get out of your seat and how much can you read and sleep??? I found that even the scenery gets old unless you can make pit stops every so often and check out some of the areas your simply riding past. Guess I can only relax for so long and then I start to get the "Heebeejeebies"....But ~ That's just me !! It might be your thing, but I know that I won't be seeing the inside of another train ~ Ever.......
Whatever you decide, Have Fun !!

I don't know why you asked this question in this category, but I've traveled on Amtrak before. I used to take it home from school during the holidays. Its a great time to sleep. No one has ever bothered me, and there's primitive flushing bathrooms and expensive food on the train. You can bring your own food and drink. They even wake you up in time for your stop, unlike commuter trains. However, I've only traveled 300 miles, between St. Louis and Chicago, I've never gone long distance.
The only bad thing about it is often the train is 3-4 hours late. So don't have plane reservations waiting for your arrival. You'll miss it.

I have traveled by Amtrak, its been fine. Not nasty at all. The cars are clean, it smells like a train, but it is clean. Its a nice way to travel. Bring your own food though because eating on a train is pretty expensive. You might want to get your own sleeping room (whatever they call them) if its going to be a cross country trip, that might be pretty expensive. I don't think everybody enjoys train travel but I do, a lot.

I went from Sacramento to San Fran; three hour trip there, and one coming back, and it was beautiful. The people on the train all had at least the cash to pay for a ticket so unlike other forms of public transportation, there weren't any nasty people on the train. Plus, the train takes the easiest route for the train, which is almost always the scenic. Worth the money!

I've traveled on Amtrak on several occasions. Starting in Birmingham, Alabama, each time, I've gone as far south as New Orleans and as far north as Williamsburg, Va. (I even took the train to Washington, D.C. for the Fourth of July once.) If you look at a map of Amtrak, you will notice that its routes tend to be rather sparse.(It tends to be used as a political football.) Indeed, it does not serve some states at all (Alaska and Maine come immediately to mind.). However, Amtrak does have one or two cross-continental routes and a traveler on Amtrak has a reasonable expectation that he occupies will be clean and the food will be good.

It's just 'Amtrak', not 'the Amtrack'. It's not nasty at all. Get a sleeper cabin and enjoy the view.
Now, remind us as to why this is a Religion & Spirituality question.

it's kind of funky, but fun.
I've never had a sleeper car, so I don't know what I've done the Coast Starlight route from San Francisco to Seattle many times.
I just can't believe it costs around as much as it does to fly despite it taking so much longer.
