There are few things you can do:
1) Diet--reduce the food that has high fat and high carbohydrate, eat more fruits and vegatable. Drink more water, avoid soda. You can buy some cookbook on healthy diet and ask you wife to cook it.
2) Exercise-at least 30 mins each day. You can start out with 15 mins three times a day and increase the quantity and intensity from there. Find some exercises that you like or you and your wife both like, so you both can support each other.
if after trying 1) and 2) for 6 months and still dose not work for you, you may try diet medication, like Xenical or Alli. Make sure you talk with you doctor first.

I went from a size 16/18 to a size 7/8 doing the following three things:
1) Walk 5 days a week for 1 hour to 1.25 hours each time. No excuses, rain sleet or snow.
2) Cut out all beverages containing calories (except skim milk). This especially includes soda (ultimate evil), juice of any kind, coffee with creamers/sugars in it, wine, beer, etc. Basically, drink water or diet soda (and skim milk). Eventually, make diet soda a treat once a week.
3) Cut out sweets. If it contains a lot of sugar, make it a rare treat (once a week).
That is it: 1, 2, 3. It took me 2.5 years to lose 80 pounds. Have kept it off for 3 years now, but I will be walking 5 days a week for the rest of my life.
Hope this helps!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Low impact aerobics is a good way, start taking walks, try to lower your fatty food intake go for lower fat options when possible. Plenty of fresh fruitd especially melons, they fill you up and not alot of calories. Also remember to take a daily multivitamin to make sure you get your necessary vitamins and drink plenty of water, try to avoid caffiene, if you find having the energy to walk and exercise a problem try taking some Ginseng too.

There is no quick and easy way to lose weight - most diet pills are simply a way for companies to get rich. These guidelines will help you start to lose weight safely and quickly.
Diet and Eating
If you are 5'5", you should be consuming 1200-1400 calories a day. Now, you could eat mostly junk food and technically lose weight, but your goal is to build muscle, burn fat, and lose inches quickly, so your eating should be clean. That means (for now) pretty much eliminating candy, cookies, cakes, pastries, etc. You want to focus on getting LOTS of lean protein and minimizing 'simple' carbs (white bread, processed food, starches). Always fill up with lots of veggies, fruit, and herbal tea with splenda. This will keep you full longer and allow you to eat more while still losing weight.
Breakfast should be egg whites with some sausage or a bit of bacon, whole grain oatmeal (NO sugar - use splenda), or low-fat/nonfat yogurt. Cantaloupe is great at every meal because it is low sugar and eases digestion. Also great are frozen or fresh mixed berries with yogurt or low fat cottage cheese -- they are delicious and low sugar and help fill you up.
Lunch should also emphasize lean protein. A great lunch is a grilled or sauteed chicken breast (use non-fat cooking spray), 1/2 cup-2/3 cup brown rice (much better than white rice), and either a cup of veggies or a salad with non-fat dressing. A great option is this new salad dressing that comes in a spray bottle - it's non fat and easy to dress your salads, you just spritz them on.
Dinner is similar. 4-6 ounces of lean protein (chicken, pork, fish) with veggies or salad (once again, low fat or nonfat dressing). Try putting a tablespoon of shelled sunflower seeds on top of the salad for crunch instead of croutons. Cantaloupe or berries are a great dessert - try sprinkling splenda on the berries to make them extra sweet.
Snacks: You want to aim for about 300-350 calories per meal, and about 100-150 calories per snack. You'll have 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. Great snacks: chopped veggies with non-fat ranch (so good), low fat cottage cheese with berries, a banana with half a tablespoon of peanut butter, Babybel light cheese, etc.
Exercise
Aim to exercise 5-6 days out of the week. Start with 30 minutes of cardio - that could be jogging outside, using the stairmaster, the elliptical (burns a lot of calories), or powerwalking with an incline on the treadmill. You'll also want to do 20-30 minutes of weights 3 times a week. Look up self magazine or another women's fitness magazine online for routines. Lifting weights will NOT make you bulk up - it will make you burn even more calories and help you permanently raise your metabolism.
Green tea extract can help give you energy and burn more calories. Omega-3 fish oil is also good for you. CLA is proven to help you lose stomach fat, along with flaxseed oil. All of these are available at a drugstore.
Work hard, don't be too hard on yourself, and plan a day after 3 weeks of dieting when you can eat your favorite junk foods! (remember, only one day :) Good luck!

make it fun. dont kill yourself if you workout. and eat healthier and smaller portions. keep up on the exercise, make a schedule of 10-20 minutes everyday and just do that for a while and see how it goes. the weight isnt going to come off in a week, it will take time, but it will be worth it.
