Hope is the light at the end of the tunnel.....
Faith is what keeps it lit.
You are mentioning addicts, and people in hopeless conditions and i see that someone here has mentioned the 12-step program.
I think what people fail to realize is that we all could benefit from working a 12-step program. Just as a way of life....
Step one admitting powerlessness and unmanagebility.
Step two coming to believe in a power greater then your self can restore you to sanity
Step three making a decision to turn your will and your life over to the care of "God, as you understand God"
This only encourages those to seek out a higher power of their own understanding....as for the rest of the steps...well, unless you are willing to go to any lengths to recover from any type of malady you are suffering from...usually a spirtual malady, being spiritually bankrupt.....not to many people care to work these steps. For it involves taking a complete thorough and moral inventory of yourself which involves seeing your part in all of the wrongs you have done, without blaming others...willing to share that with yourself, your God, and another human being and then make amends for the wrongs you have done others, except when doing so would hurt them or others.........
it is a very humbling experience but is also a very cleansing process....to obtain freedom from a life time of bondage from several things..anything from alcoholism and addictions, to controlling behaviors and overeating...gambling...etc....
It is programs as this that has restored people in very hopeless conditions to have a reason to live...to gain a new way of life and to gain the faith in a higher power of their choice.....
We are all dying......Why not with Faith?
Bless them all!
Blessed Be!

The psychological aspect of faith always makes me uncomfortable. I suppose that faith could be something on par with suspending belief when you're watching a movie. If somebody needs a sense of faith for psychological reasons, in order to survive, then I do not feel comfortable critiquing them. Their faith doesn't prove that anything exists, of course, but if it gets them through the day then it may have one small, redeeming point, especially if they are somebody at a disadvantage with no way to improve.
I'm not sure why, but it makes me uncomfortable.

It can be useful - the 12 step programme has helped for many. However there are also many other ways in which a person in distress can be helped.

Yes, even if you are in diar straights Christ is always there. Faith is at times all that we as Christians have, but God doesn't give us anything we can't handle.
and may He bless those who you speak of.

Sometimes it does help to think that there's some big guy in the sky helping them out.
