Okay so here are a bunch of answers, I am not sure exactly what weapon system you wanted, I assume riffle but I have the statistics for a few machine guns as well.
M4 Carbine:
The M4, is a light weight, hand held magazine fed, shoulder fire weapon, that fires a 5.56 MM round from the semiautomatic (That just means you don’t have to manually load the weapon every time you shoot, no bolt action here) or three round bust setting (just like it sounds three round busts), with a collapsible butt stock.
Semiautomatic - 45 rounds per minute
Burst - 90 rounds per minute
Sustained (If you loaded a round manually every time) - 12-15 rounds per minute
Now what makes it hard to gauge the Machine Guns listed below is that the barrels of the weapons get very hot as these rounds are running through there, so the barrel can over heat, so it is rare to get as many rounds down range as these numbers may suggest.
Cyclic - If there was a never ending belt of ammo and you just held the trigger down until the weapon exploded
M249 SAW:
The M249 (Squad Automatic Weapon) Machine Gun is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt or magazine-fed, automatic weapon that fires a 5.56 MM round from the open-bolt position.
Sustained -100 rounds per minute
Rapid - 200 rounds per minute
Cyclic - 650 to 850 rounds per minute
M2:
The Browning machine gun caliber .50 HB, M2 is a belt-fed, recoil-operated, air-cooled, crew-served machine gun that fires a .50 Caliber Round. The gun is capable of single shot, as well as automatic fire, and operates on the short recoil principle.
Sustained - Less than 40 rounds per minute, in bursts of five to seven rounds, fired at 10- to 15-second intervals.
Rapid - More than 40 rounds per minute, fired in bursts of five to seven rounds, at 5- to 10-second intervals.
Cyclic - 450-550 rounds per minute
M240B:
The M240B is a belt-fed, air-cooled, gas-operated, fully automatic machine gun that fires a 7.62 MM from the open bolt position.
Sustained -100 Rounds per minute
Sustained -200 Rounds per minute
Cyclic - 650 to 950 Rounds per minute
M60:
The M60 is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt-fed, automatic machine gun that fires a 7.62MM from the open-bolt position.
Sustained - 100
Rapid - 200
Cyclic - 550
I hope this helps.

You watched the move Glory staring Morgan Freeman didn;t you?
Well son, we no longer you powder rifles with lead shot anymore. With a no automatic rifle these days a man can fire accurately at least three shot in ten seconds.

I saw a tape, a NJ state trooper got off 50 shots in a minute, from a pistol. .
With automatc weapons, a machinegun can fire at a rate of 500 plus rounds per minute.

Accurate, aimed fire is about one shot per second. Full auto, hose-of-death firing is whatever the maximum fire rate for your weapon is. I hope whoever shoots that way has friends because he'll be out of ammo in about 3 seconds.

We don't. We fire for effect. In WWII, we averaged around 10,000 rounds per enemy killed. In Viet Nam, it was around 25,000 rounds per enemy killed. Today, with the war in Iraq considered, we've probably lowered that number considerably because we don't have platoons engaging each other. Soldiers get few opportunities to shoot back. A soldier today can fire as many rounds per minute as his weapon will allow.
