she roped me into helping when i was drinking and in a very agreeable mood. However I have since spoken with her and it sounds like it is going to be a gong show move and I am really not looking forward to standing around in the hot sun waiting for the place to get organised, let alone the hour drive to her place. is there anyway to get out of this one nicely?

Just don't show up! LOL

JK. Let her know that you are unable to do it. Don't lie just be honest. Let her know that you are really not in the mood to be involved with the moving, but if she needs help organizing in the future, you will be there for her. This way you get out of moving and get to do the fun thing... unpacking!

I'm not really sure about the expression 'gong show move' but I figure you mean it's going to be organised badly so it takes for ever and no one's going much of anything? Can you give her some helpful tips and organise the thing better? That'd be a great help and save you a lot of time!

Tell her you changed your mind and don't want to be out in the hot sun and wait around. Tell her you think its all going to be a gong show move and you have better things to do. If she's really your "friend", tell her the truth! On the other hand.... you gave your word! If that means nothing to you, go ahead and back out.

Either way, this is really crappy of you! A friend is there when one needs help, and she asked for you help and you ('drunk' or not) agreed to help her. It wil;l be pretty shitt of you now that it's time for the move to just back out and leave her hanging, Im sure she is really depending on you. But go ahead and give her a lame excuse to get out of it. Hopefully you'll need her for somthing really big an important one day and she will forget what a sh itty friend you are and help you anyways- because that what friends do.

"gong show move"????

Say that when you said yes you forgot about a previous engagement and need to cancel your helping her move.

Concur Jennifer, she'll soon get the message, if she was drinking also she might not remember who is suppose to be there anyway.
Relax.

She's a friend & you are committed now, so make the most of it. It's her moving day & you should be willing to give her a hand. Moral of the story, stay sober so you don't commit yourself in the future.
